Today, Acting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli offered a new take on the poem mounted on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.
"Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge," Cuccinelli said during in an interview with NPR's "Morning Edition."
The interview was part of an effort to defend a new Trump administration rule aimed at making it harder for poorer legal immigrants to stay in the U.S.
NBC News' Allan Smith reports:
The [NPR] interview followed the administration's Monday announcement of a rule that would make it more difficult for low-income, legal immigrants who receive public assistance to remain in the country legally. That rule, set to go into effect in mid-October, would require immigrants who apply for a change in their immigration status or those who seek to come to the U.S. legally to prove that they are unlikely to ever need public assistance. The rule can also prevent immigrants who have already received a certain level of public assistance from having their applications approved.
On CNN Tuesday night, Cuccinelli defended his rewrite of the Emma Lazarus poem, saying the words on the Statute of Liberty are actually referring to “people coming from Europe” and “wretched’ didn’t really mean “wretched,” just that they were commoners and not members of the nobility or gentry.
On the 11th Hour, Republican strategist and Trump critic Rick Wilson had this to say:
“This is the American story writ large. Generations after generations... who came here not because we were a race or a single tribe, but because we were a propositional nation-- that if you came here, you can become American...
Ken [Cuccinelli] has adopted the Stephen Miller-Steve Bannon-Donald Trump mode of thinking that immigration should be based... let's be honest about this... this not code for whether they're [immigrants are] coming here with a 401k or not... it's code if people are coming if they're white or not...
This is a disappointing moment.... Traditional conservatism deeply believed in the power of America to create Americans... not a racial or genetic component that people can never have.”

here is another avenue that trump and right wing short term thinkers are melting the copper to sell it off with short term thinking.
with the great money giveaway seems we are falling behind in R&D.

Shaibani tells us this is because the stress leads to the distortion of key components, namely the carbon matrix responsible for passing electrons to the insulating sulfur, and the polymer binder that holds those two materials together. The resulting breakdown of this connection causes a rapid deterioration in the battery's performance.
So Shaibani and a team of international collaborators started looking at new ways of holding it all together. Rather than using the binding material to form a dense network with little room to spare, she decided to "give the sulfur particles some space to breath!"
The new battery relies on a traditional binding agent, but processed in a different way to form ultra-strong bridging bonds between the carbon matrix and sulfur particles that allow for extra space as the battery expands during charging. These bonds can be seen in figure b below.

"In other words, I created a web-like network where only a minimum amount of binder is in place between the neighboring particles, leaving increased space for accommodating the changes in the structure and the resultant stress," Shaibani says.
The team's experiments with its new lithium-sulfur battery have produced some promising signs. In testing over more than 200 cycles, the battery exhibited a charge/discharge efficiency of more than 99 percent, "which to the best of our knowledge is unprecedented for such high capacity electrodes," says Shaibani.
The researchers say the battery could power a smartphone for five continuous days or enable an electric vehicle to drive more than 1,000 km without recharging. They are poised to trial the battery further over the coming year, both in electric cars and as a storage option for solar power. They have also filed a patent for the technology, which in addition to improved performance promises lower cost and less environmental impact than traditional lithium-ion batteries.
"This approach not only favors high performance metrics and long cycle life, but is also simple and extremely low-cost to manufacture, using water-based processes, and can lead to significant reductions in environmentally hazardous waste," says study co-author Matthew Hill.
The team has published its research in the journal Science Advances.
