Maybe windsurfing deserves two disciplines in the olympics
My guess is that the issue is not, "which class is in the olympics". If the LT is going to revive the sport then it can do so without being in the olympics.
I dont think I have ever seen an RS:X in the flesh and of course have never ridden one. So to say that a class needs to be in the olympics to become popular is a bit of a myth.
I haven't seen anyone riding the LT at my local but i have seen multiple people freesailing on boards the same or very similar to the Starboard IQ, so why not use a class that is already popular from a freeriding perspective.
I like the LT concept as I liked the Kona One, I just think most people want to foil/slalom if they have the choice. |

There will be way less tactical decisions than r:sx racing.
When folks claim that foiling is the right direction for olympic windsurfing, that's one thing, as everyone has the right to an opinion. But any experienced sailor who has raced multiple disciplines will tell you that the foil boards will be a giant step backwards if the intent was to put a premium on tactics. |

I'm interested in why the Olympics would want to put a premium on tactics.
It seems like individual sports in the Olympics give an edge to physical
(and mental) preparation and abilities, with a dose of excitement for the
crowd.

Exactly! They must not be interested in tactical racing. I was just responding to a post stating that foiling WOULD be tactical racing.
There have been 4 different boards used in the Olympics. Only one, the Mistral One Design, was ever a popular board. I doubt if this particular foil board, with it's 9m sail and 200l hull, will be used by more than a handful in the US. |

When you are going 4 mph, "tactical" racing matters. When you are going 20, you are concerned with different choices (yes, there are still tactics but luffing matches, etc aren't part of it). Most of us here, as windsurfers, enjoy the 20. So do the racers who were invited to Lake Garda to evaluate the equipment. So do a bunch of present and past Olympians and RS:X world champions who favor the foil.
Choose the wrong side of the course, tack in a bad spot, get caught in bad air affect foils greatly because of the speed differences. Honestly, coming from a background of sailing Lasers, any windsurfer, IMCO, RS:X etc is not that "tactical". When a raceboard can roll tack straight upwind, let me know. |
