Today is another in a series of windy days, now with dawn and afternoon ebb tides. I sailed a 5.0 with a 75 L board, then a 5.4 with a 85 L board.

Just after dawn, it picked up with an ebb tide to create the usual ramps for jumping a windsurfer.

ERROR!!!, Yes, The Delta was the place to be of late. And your pictures show it. Finally getting some breeze on the coast. Natural Bridges had a few windsurfers enjoying it today. I was one of them.

Dawn Patrol on a flood tide was enjoyable windsurfing a 75L board and 4.7 sail. The afternoon was windy too for the ebb tide. Pictured is Mike Vestel.

With the recent lack of wind on the coast, I had not gotten to go windsurfing but for one day in the last seven. So when both the ProForcast and the WF-WRF model indicating possible mid-teens at Natural Bridges, I set my sights on there. Had the Angulo SailSUP in the van and headed to the west side of Santa Cruz.
Bummer. Natural Bridges parking was closed. Swanton Blvd and Delaware Avenue were packed. Hiking in would have been farther than during the early COVID time.
Hooray! Found a parking spot at Mitchells Cove. Not much wind near shore. Measured a couple of knots of wind and 102 degrees F with my handheld. However outside about a half mile it looked like the mid-teens iwindsurf had promised.
Rigged by the parking and carried the gear a part at a time down to the beach via the stairway. Had my CamelBack on and was sucking a lot of water. Wetsuits can be warm. I went into the ocean to cool off prior to launching.
Launched and eased out in the light wind, greater than two knots at this time, probably around four, headed towards the white caps outside. Wind near shore was unbelievably hot, but as I passed outward from the land points upwind, the temperature dropped significantly. And the wind picked up. Blowing probably 14 knots outside. Perfect for the SailSUP and the Ezzy Cheetah 7.0.
I tacked up the coast. Sometimes I jibed, sometimes I tacked, as I changed tacks. By the second outside tack, I could see through the eye of the Natural Bridge. Thirty minutes after launching I was off of the rocks at Natural Bridges State Beach. The last part of the route in was through the kelp with me wiggling a weave here and there to make my way through it. Was able to do that pretty cleanly. I knew there was a path there as I use it sometimes to get outside at Natural Bridges when I cannot make the upwind amount I need to be in the main channel.
Played around on the speed run section near the windward kelp bed. The edge of the kelp is pretty ragged and the kelp is not all that thick at this time. So not ideal, but I was getting 13 knot runs at times with the wind being only about 14 knots.
Wind seemed like it might want to die. Was getting more up and down and it was close to the Natural Bridges witching hour of 4 p.m., so decided to head back. Thought I could find a path through the downwind kelp bed. Wrong. I fell in after hitting a big head of kelp and did not have enough wind to waterstart. Ended up in waterstart position with the board sliding and my butt sliding over the kelp driven by the wind that there was. This worked fine actually. Got into a bit of open water between kelp heads and uphauled and sailed in to off of the parking lot overlook.
I continued to sail downwind along the coast inside of the kelp beds. Had to keep an eye out for heads and direct my path around them. Got to Swift Avenue and there is another open channel there between kelp beds to the outside. I took it. Hey this upwind kelp bed edge was straighter, cleaner than the one at Bridges. And the wind was back to mid-teens. I played on this speed run playground for a bit and hit 16 knots on one run which is pretty good for a SailSUP and 14 knots, or thereabouts, for wind.
I went downwind further and found another good speed run area off of Fair Avenue. Played there for a bit, but wind was lessening and so headed back towards Mitchells crossing the last kelp bed. Just downwind of that, my sail was suddenly backwinded and I had to swing it around and drop it in the water to keep from being pushed off of the board. The east wind had come up in the snap of a finger. It was actually pretty strong, maybe around 8 knots. I headed into the beach with that knowing that it was likely to peter out a bit as it was going to be fought by the west wind for a bit longer.
So that was my SailSUP day. I find it a pretty fun activity. Another little genre of the many that make up windsurfing.
