Depends on what kind of foil board to be honest. Likely you're going to spend about $800 on supplies and you can find close out boards for not much more.
Or you can buy a cheap board with unsuitable fin box then spend relatively little time/money putting in a foil mount and possibly shortening it.
Conversely I've been thinking about building a foil board using a hollow wood construction. They don't generally need complex bottom, deck or rail shapes. |

I've been modifying an old, old Formula board for windfoiling more as a technical exercise rather than a money saving one. I concur with the previous post, it's difficult to save money unless you are just doing (as mentioned) a box refit and maybe clipping the nose. When you price out all the inserts, sandwich material, carbon/s-glass, pvc foam to re-enforce the box or just buying a good foil box outright, resin, consumables, etc. it quickly adds up. And, this assumes you got the shape right and unless you've been foiling a while, that isn't so easy because it will be difficult to identify the characteristics that are important.
Use and break someone else's design first before you build your own. There are some used boards starting to become available and even new boards aren't too dear for what you get. |

To modify a existing board to accept the foil, wouldn’t be expensive .
To make a board from scratch , costs include either a blank , or household insulation , core cell or divinycell, s- glass, e glass, carbon , epoxy , paint, fittings- mast track, fin box, foot strap inserts, msc , as sanding discs, sand paper. $700.the time involved on construction vs what you could be doing _________________ K4 fins

I made a windsurf board, odd how foils enters the conversation.
I don’t foil. One would have to copy , not exact , a board to reproduce the design . _________________ K4 fins
