Somewhere along the San Mateo County coast. Starts with "P" and ends with "o." A rare treat and not to be toyed with over head high.

Silly to try to keep spots secret, you WANT more sailors joining you nowadaze.
We mostly sailed San Gregorio because of easier parking and shorter walk.
That whole coast has been sailed, but few bother to check it on pre storm days.

Not too sure about San Gregorio's shorter walk. I've not sailed there.

There is parking at Pescadero and the walk is not much further than that at Waddell, without the steps. However, Dlee is right, no reason to keep it secret. Crowded at Pescadero is 5 sailors at any one time.

Look for prefrontal SE winds and smaller swell sizes. It breaks very hard there. Avoid the south part of the beach as there is a sand bar where the current will cut the legs out from under you and push you downwind before you have time to react. Kai Katchadourian got schooled there back in the day and retained it as a "score to settle" up until a recent secret AWT (last here in NorCal - it was a bust) alternative session in 2014?? Port tack spot for all the European sailors to shine. Us locals feel like we are drunk sailing it.

Dlee - Any tips for sailing off the beach just north of the Pidgeon Point lighthouse? I've been eyeballing it for years as I drive down on my way to the usual spots. Sometimes, it looks pretty inviting, but there are rocks and likely strong currents. Seems sketchy. I've heard it called pistachio beach, but I think that's a made up name.

There IS a name for that spot.....but I never cared to look.
We called it Bergerson's Beach, sailed on NNW only, and surfed by Ken B.
Shifty and wide, but on bigger swells lines up right at the North Reed reeling like 4 mile, but easier kelp beds and more wind on shore from lower rocky cliffs. Just rocky land, not cliffs.
Seen it sailed a dozen times, several with Matt Haut.
Only sailed it twice, found it hard to stay upwind after a wave, as wind direction is different in and outside.
Liked S of Pigeon at the V cut better, sailing the long flattish swells.
Didn't enjoy Gazos...too many closeouts.
Better is the outside reefs at the Cattle Gate with a walk to the line tree, steep sandy beach.

dllee is amazing.

Looking at port tack pictures makes me dizzy.

BTW on "port tack" days we are sailing *out* on port tack, right? Why do we call it ... seems weird anyways.

Sailing waves on port you're sailing goofy foot. For most of us sailing in California in more normal west to west-northwest winds, you're riding waves standard foot. As a standard foot surfer my whole life, it's much easier windsurfing waves down-the-line on non-port wind days.

I am listed in Surfing California credits.
Also in Windfinder as a resource for a dozen sites.
Worked at Wises and shaped for him.
Worked at Sausalito Sailboards and Windsports, '85 thru '00.
Attended 10 AWIA trade shows.
Just osmosis teaches a little bit.
Now a kook who get's on his knees before standing up on a surfboard.

Surfsailing both tacks is required.
S winds rainy days and NW clearing winds.
My 1st 3 wavesailing days, 1 at Sloat, 2 at PedroPt.
on S winds goof. Was nothing like surfing for 20 years.
Following spring, NW days at HMB, Wads, and VFW's.
