For 187 Minutes Lying Loser 45 did NOTHING!
During the 187 minutes that Trump stood by, harrowing scenes of violence played out in and around the Capitol. Twenty-five minutes into Trump’s silence, a news photographer was dragged down a flight of stairs and thrown over a wall. Fifty-two minutes in, a police officer was kicked in the chest and surrounded by a mob. Within the first hour, two rioters died as a result of cardiac events. Sixty-four minutes in, a rioter paraded a Confederate battle flag through the Capitol. Seventy-three minutes in, another police officer was sprayed in the face with chemicals. Seventy-eight minutes in, yet another police officer was assaulted with a flagpole. Eighty-three minutes in, rioters broke into and began looting the House speaker’s office. Ninety-three minutes in, another news photographer was surrounded, pushed down and robbed of a camera. Ninety-four minutes in, a rioter was shot and killed. One hundred two minutes in, rioters stormed the Senate chamber, stealing papers and posing for photographs around the dais. One hundred sixteen minutes in, a fourth police officer was crushed in a doorway and beaten with his own baton.

How (and why) the Jan. 6 committee is making 'real progress'
On the surface, the Jan. 6 committee is fighting with Team Trump for cooperation. Below the surface, the investigation is making surprising strides.

As NBC News reported, there's fresh evidence to the contrary.
Members of the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol have interviewed more than 150 people so far, ranking member Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said Thursday. Cheney, the top Republican on the select committee, said that the panel spoke to "a whole range of people connected to the events, connected to understanding what happens."
The select committee's co-chair added, "It is a range of engagements — some formal interviews, some depositions.... There really is a huge amount of work underway that is leading to real progress for us."
It led Politico to note, "The public has just seen the tip of the iceberg.... [Cheney's reference to more than 150 interviews] is an indication that the vast majority of the committee's work is happening out of public view."
In related news:
Donald Trump's lawyers were in court yesterday, insisting that the former president should be allowed to claim executive privilege over documents sought by the Jan. 6 committee. To put it mildly, a federal judge appeared skeptical of the Republican's arguments.
CNN reported that Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, who chairs the bipartisan select committee, said that he's signed about 20 additional subpoenas, which should go out "soon," possibly as early as today.
Politico reported yesterday that committee investigators "are examining the contacts between one of the rioters who breached the Capitol and state-level GOP officials who worked with former President Donald Trump as he attempted to overturn the 2020 election."
Reuters reported that the House select committee is scheduled to hear testimony today from Jeffrey Clark, a former senior Justice Department official in the Trump administration.
If Clark's name sounds familiar, it's not your imagination. As regular readers may recall, in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, as Donald Trump explored ways to weaponize the Justice Department to help him hold power he hadn't earned, Clark became a person of great importance to the then-president. |

Over the course of the year, however, the former president radically changed direction, repeatedly offering public support for those who participated in the attack. Trump has not only tolerated rioters, he's celebrated them.
But newly released audio frames this issue in a startling light. NBC News reported this morning:
Former President Donald Trump defended rioters' chants of "hang Mike Pence" during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, saying it was understandable because they were angry the election hadn't been overturned, according to audio released Friday of an interview with the former president in March. The audio came from an interview with ABC News' Jonathan Karl conducted at Mar-a-Lago in March for an upcoming book, "Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show." The excerpt was obtained Friday by NBC News from ABC News' This Week.
In context, Karl asked the former president whether he was concerned about Pence's safety during the assault on the Capitol. "No, I thought he was well-protected, and I had heard that he was in good shape," Trump replied. No. Because I had heard he was in very good shape. But, but, no, I think — "
At that point, the reporter intervened, reminding the Republican, "Because you heard those chants — that was terrible." Trump was unmoved, saying, "He could have — well, the people were very angry."
Karl added, "They were saying, 'Hang Mike Pence.'" Trump responded, "Because it's common sense, Jon."
At that point, the former president returned to his ridiculous anti-election conspiracy theories.
It would've been easy for Trump to express at least some degree of discomfort with rioters chanting "Hang Mike Pence" during an attack on his own country's Capitol. Pence was, after all, his handpicked vice president who'd shown him nothing but unflinching loyalty since Day One. Common sense — and common decency — suggests Trump could've at least said it was wrong for rioters to say they wanted to assassinate the man who was one heartbeat from the presidency.
But Trump couldn't bring himself to take such a step. Instead of condemning the "Hang Mike Pence" chanters, the former president effectively defended them. |

House Republicans are now equating the objections to state votes in 2017 by Democrats to the Jan. 6th rioters. They claim Democrats are guilty of Obstruction of an Official Proceeding.
They failed to recognize their own objections in 2021.

When reached for comment by The Hill, representatives for Donald Trump, Eric Trump and Kim Kremer did not immediately respond to the Rolling Stone article.
Rolling Stone reported last month that Trump White House officials and many of his GOP allies had been involved in the planning of the Jan. 6 rally, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Mo Brooks (Ala.), Madison Cawthorn (N.C.), Andy Biggs (Ariz.) and Louie Gohmert (Texas.).
Meadows, who was subpoenaed by the House Select Committee on Jan. 6, was reportedly "100 percent made aware of what was going on," according to planners of the rally. The committee has recently demanded to know whether Meadows was using a private cell phone on Jan. 6 and has asked where his text messages from that day are. |
