How to read ASOS wind/gust reports (most airports)

Any ASOS wind gust report has lull data encoded. Read on if interested:

ASOS calculates 2 min average wind speed S, sliding window, over last 2 min - this is what is reported as wind speed. Values under 2 kt are reported as 0

Stored gust SG is max 5 sec average that exceeds S by 5 kt, and S must be over 9kt itself.
Stored lull SL is min 5 sec average.
Both are memorized for 10 min, sliding window, but not reported.

A stored gust is reported only when it exceeds S by 3 kt AND the SL by 10 kt.

This means that in every gust reported by ASOS, there is at least 10 kt lull underneath, within last 10 min.

Bringing up old post, very relevant today:

In every gust reported by an airport sensor there is at least 10 kt lull underneath, within the last 10 min.

So, if you see gust value close to average, this means shorter but sharp lulls, if it's far from the average it means short sharp gusts - with 10kt+ difference

An airport sensor will record a lull of at least 10 kt within the last 10 minutes for any gust that it detects.

A gust number that is close to the average indicates brief but intense lulls, whereas a gust value that is far from the average indicates brief but intense gusts (a difference of 10 kt or more). basketball stars
