|
|
Anyone sail San Luis Reservoir lately? or last year?
The ranger's recording for this morning seems to indicate a water level of "51.30". I've been told in the past that you need a water level of "219" to sail.
Have the measurements changed? Are we good to go?
Also, where are the top few spots to park and launch? From my decade-old notes, the top 3 are/were:
1. sail south side of forebay: park in Madieros area.
2. sail north side of forebay: park in Catfish Flats area.
3. sail Main Reservoir: park in Basalt area.
I've sailed each side of the forebay in my lifetime, but never the main reservoir. Anyone do that lately? Still need a buddy on a rope and a flaregun?
Saturday looked like it was nice and windy:

Saturday at San Luis was excellent -- all day on a 3.2 (okay, I'm a light-
weight), big guys on 4.2.
Lake level on Saturday was 220+, you don't want to sail it if it's less than 217. Haven't had much luck with the big lake launches, haven't tried 'em in years. They always seemed really holey on the inside. Most people do the forebay. Madieros launch is probably the most consistent wind.

Lisa,
Do you live in the Fresno area, have a daughter that is a great volleyball player, drive an old Ford Aerstar and did you teach windsurfing at Del Valle?

If the water level is below 219 it's not worth the drive unless you want to
try sailing the upper res around the boat ramp or goosehead point.

I'm not sure if you need all the safety gear still..It used to be posted
in the ranger station information window when entering the Basalt
area..I ask a ranger last year and they didn't know..I kinda think you
can sail the upper res without all the safety gear. Goosehead point
has a nice dirt road around the base with many places to launch. But,
if you wait til later in the summer, when the water level is lower, it's more
of a pain because you have to walk your gear for a ways and put up
with smelly mud...Early spring into early summer is the best time to sail
the upper res....

CoachG -
Nope, that's not me. I live in Santa Cruz and have an 8-yr-old son who wants to learn to sail this year!
Sorry,
Lisa.

You could also take him to Shoreline in Mountain View to get started.
