April of 2006. The first sailing day of the year. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and all was right with the world in anticipation of a great session. I rigged my 5.5 and started in waist deep water. I got into my harness and straps and just as I got onto a plane - wham!. I hit bottom in less than a foot of water and went completely over the handlebars and landed on my shoulder. Long story short - I broke my shoulder and couldn't get out again for six weeks. That sucked. Sorry to hear that levels at the Forebay are still not safe. I shudder to think about hitting that bar fully powered up at 30 knotts. |

I sailed there this last weekend (6/23 - 6/25). The wind was good and the water level was beautiful. There are a few clumps of weed floating around but nothing thick. Soon, though |

I've never sailed or even been to san luis. Is the forebay the main sailing area or the reservoir? Is this a good place to bring the family for a camping weekend? Is it mostly flat water or can it ramp up? I read the info on the site page but it doesn't say a whole lot. Any info on the site and sailing conditions is much appreciated. |

I have been following the water levels and in the last week its been above 219 in the 220 to even 223 range but there hasn't been any fog on the coast So although its been blowing some there has been little fog on the coast so I don't know it its worth the drive. If you want an hourly report on the water levels there is a link in the info section for the San Luis site on iwindsurf.com. |

I sail there a lot. It is a great place to camp by the water, Medeiros side only. You can camp right next to the water and leave your gear rigged. The cost is quite nominal, ~ $10.
The wind blows very hard overnight at times. Forget a tent or tent trailer.
There isn't a lot to do other than windsurf, bicycle, fish or kayak. he nearest store is at the intersection of 152 & 33 and it is a truck stop.
If you take little kids, keep them away from the road. The fishermen blast through the windsurfing area.
The water is mostly flat but high winds can generate some decent ramps. ABK instructors have been known to do loops.
The water level has been a real killer this season. Don't go without a weed fin, if you don't need it now you will need it real soon. If the weather guys predict a cooling trend in the central valley, good wind usually follows. The wind comes up early (normally lost on me) and late. Many times I won't launch until 4-5 pm and sail until sunset. Get off the water at sunset, the rangers occaisionally ticket folks for sailing after sunset. |

Does anyone in this forum read the paper, or even know more about the weather than when the wind is blowing? This has been the driest year in ages, people! Water level low? Gee, imagine! And how about those Delta pumps? Does anyone know a thing about the endangered Delta smelt, that the pumps to the aquaduct were shut down for many days because of it? Get a clue. |

Get a clue? Easy now...we don't need to be berated for asking reasonable questions. The water level in the forebay is related to the California Aqueduct sytem and elecrtical power generation demands, drought, and maybe recently Delta smelt, etc. Chronic low water has been a periodic problem for years including those with more than adequate rainfall and storage in the main lake above. Sometimes the water is low early in the season and much higher later in the year when water reserves are lower and temperatures and power demands much higher. All we are looking for is a better understanding of the balance between the competing needs (including recreation) and the decision making process. |

During the recent shut down of the state pumps at Tracy, water was drawn from San Luis to provide for South Bay communities. |
