Hi there,
Am thinking of purchasing property in upstate NY and am wondering if there is any good sailing on the Hudson or any inland lakes? New Hyde Park up to Kingston is where I'm looking. Thanks!

Welcome to the Hudson. You'll find some great sites along the Hudson from Haverstraw Bay north to as far as Germantown. Any lakes worth looking at are the property of the NYC Water Authority and are not allowed to be enjoyed. The rest are just too small. There are now three iWindsurf meters in place at Scarborough, Newburgh Bay (Bannerman's) and Kingston. The Hudson River Windsurfers is the club in the Lower Hudson Valley and the Hudson Valley Windsurfers is the club in the Mid Hudson. Depending on wind direction, you'll find sites for all directions except due W and due E. The farther south you are, the easier it is to escape to the Conn. NJ or LI shores for summer winds. Everything else in the valley is frontal. You'll quickly learn about tides, etc. As they will make or break your day. Gear ranges from big light air gear to small hair ball, going to die, storm gear. Weed fins become required in summer due to invasive water chestnuts. If you ride, ski, climb etc. Then Mid Hudson is better than southern. Real Estate prices are also cheaper on the western side. Check the iWindsurf sites for history and links. Welcome and good luck.

Thanks Rick
Invasive water chestnuts? Is that euphemism for something? Or are you serious? I really don't know!
Where is your favorite place to sail, and is it still SW as prevailing wind direction? What about boat traffic, is it like the Gorge with barges et al?
I figure that if I end up buying where it's within a half hour hour drive of a good launch then I'll be ok. I'll try to find that site that you mentioned.

Water chestnuts. Imported as a source of nut flour and as an attractive water plant. Got away and has invested many inland waters. Gnarly little nut shell with deadly spikes sticking out in four directions. Florida has sharks, LI has brown tide, we have water chestnuts. Only dangerouse when you walk the beach and step on them or sail into a raft of them floating down river.
Hudson is tidal, so wind and current will set us up for some Gorge like conditions on occasion. If you are planning, no problem, but proper fin size and pointing ability are important.
Around Kingston, you've SW at Rider Park, west side, off of Rt 32. NW,N, NE you've Kingston Point Beach. Historically, NE at KPB is great. When other places are dead, or very gusty on NE, Kingston goes off. Those are the two number one choices in Kingston area. Further south you've some great places as well around the Beacon, Newbugh, Cornwall area depending on wind direction and tide. There is lots in Haverstraw Bay area though I have only sailed at Croton Point Park on WNW and NW. Till next time. Rick

Hey there! You may want to take day trips to western Long Island. We have amazing sailing in both the western Long Island Sound and the South Shore year round. Spots like Bayville and West Neck are hot for NW,W,E,NE winds, and the Ocean (TOBAY, Gilgo, Cedar, Robert Moses) and south shore bays (Hecksher, Tanner) are great in S,SW,SE, E,W,NE,NE winds. The drive is not too bad, and the quality of sailing and the options available are awesome. My friends from Conn. and Croton always make the drive. If you want wave sailing, that is your only choice.
