Most references I see on i-windsurf (including the wind observation map) call that big island at the confluence of the Willamette and the Columbia “Sauvies” Island.
Now, I don’t know who has the final say on these sorts of things, but the US Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, USGS TopoZone, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, US Post Office, Map Quest, Sauvieisland .org, Sauvie Island Elementary School, Sauvie Island Volunteer Fire Department, AND Monsieur Laurent Sauvie (the French Canadian Hudson Bay Company employee for whom the island was named) all agree that it is really Sauvie (no “s” at the end) Island.

My understanding is that it is "Sauvie's" island, as in possessive, slanging it up. I have also heard it called "Sauvie's Choice", like the movie. Much like the hatch, the event sight, the marina, doug's beach, the wall, the grain tower, the cove, etc are slang terms for specific sights that have more specific and "governmental" names.

I think Laurent may be pleased that we call it his island.
