I'm putting together my 2008 "tour" as my bride calls it.

Does the wind support a trip in April ?

She still has 2 "no windsurf day cards" from this year, she thinks they transfer, don't think so......

Rio usually doesn't blow in April... unless we get northerlies, in which case it will blow hard but be very up and down. If you're in northern CA, April usually has strong NW wind.... think about Bodega, Tomales, the Coast, Crissy, etc... can have some epic 4.0 days that time of year.

I just looked at my windsurf diary and in April 2007 my friends and I sailed Berkeley, Treasure Is, Crissy, Candlestick and 3rd Ave.

wind gets better in May, especially towards the end of the month, check out the wind archive for May 2007

What conditions do you like to sail? In April, it's mostly NW'erlies. Coast, Crissy, 3rd Ave, Tomales and Blowdega. I also see a lot of Berkeley days in April in my log. But I have far fewer days in April that May. Might want to consider that. You'd have a better chance of picking up a lot of TOW.

As far as what to recommend for a tourist sailor: For scenery - Crissy, Tomales. For big winds - Tomales, TI. For swell - Sherman Island, 3rd, TI, Tomales, sometimes Crissy at the North Tower (all these sites work best on an ebb). Flat water - Bodega, Candlestick. Waves - Waddell. Vibe and overall fun-ness - Sherman Island.

If your wife is tagging along, she might fare best at Crissy if she wants to ditch you and go to a museum. Tomales if she likes watching and can stay warm, and if you want some good apres-sail beer and oysters. Sherman Island if she likes watching but doesn't want to be cold. She'd be miserable at TI, 3rd. She wouldn't be safe at Candlestick.

Late May, June, July or August if you want to plan a trip to Sherman. That would be your best bet for long range plans. April? Head for the coast or bay. Only strong northerlies in April in the valley. Not very good for Sherman but great for lakes.
