|
|
I'm headed to Southern Spain in the first two weeks of May for a family vacation. The fam is kind enough to indulge my obsession and stop off in Tarifa for the day.
I'm a strong intermediate sailor (waterstart, sail in the foot straps, make my jybes 50% of the time) and I've sailed in very strong winds but have no wave sailing experience. Can anyone recommend a good shop to rent from ideally right on a sailing beach and a good beach to sail. Also, will I need a wetsuit this time of year?
Any other tips on Tarifa are appreciated. Thanks!! |

I was there in 03 and didn't sail. The consensus is that Tarifa is no longer as windy as it used to be and, today, most people kite there. There's no surf and most of my European windsurfer friends say Morocco is much better (wind and waves). If you really want to sail Tarifa, there are rental places in town. If I were you, I'd just show up, see if it is windy and then find a rental. Most people kite and sail about a half mile west of town, the beach is long and sandy and I remember there were plenty of pretty girls (if that is a consideration). Overall, it is a cool place but a little out of the way. When you go there avoid Algiceras (a dump) and Cadiz, but be sure to go to Sevilla.

I sailed at Tarifa about 4 years ago. Had two weeks of nonstop strong
winds. Beautiful beach, friendly people. Renting is easy-just
go to Spinout on the beach. Equipment is good. Everyone knows
where Spinout is-at the other end of the beach from the town of
Tarifa. Went back two years later and the wind wasn't as good but
still several great days. |

I was there last October and had a good time. I rented gear from Club Mistral at Playa Valdevaqueros (near the huge sand dune). There were lots of kiters, but plenty of windsurfers too. Tarifa town is fun too.
Other great towns in southern Spain are Grenada, Ronda, and Sevilla.
Tapas are great and the wine is cheap.
