You can register for free. And I agree with andydavis, the berkeley cam gives Berkeley the title of "most sensored spot". |

Old/defunct windtalk sensor of SFBA was on WS mast (My step-daughter Amy's one-piece 460 as I recall) at western side of Berkeley Yacht Club bldg. It read really well for typical summer winds, but was not useful for winter S-SE winds due to trees/marina blockages. Also didn't require a computer or pager. Tracy Pierce and I did some maintenance on it few years ago - but haven't seen him in ages either. Was sorry to see windtalker "vanish", but at least now I know it was conscious decision (of some sort?). I also used it to check iWind readings, as it was more realistic for whatever reason. David |

The cam freezes up from time to time and doesn't update pictures for a while. Otherwise it is a great source of information. I can even see my buddies's sails in the water before I head out the door. In any case it is not like the Exploratorium cam where you can operate and see real time images. |

what's stranger than the sensor reading high is that in the summer when it says it's 22 people are out on 6.0s. It goes up a couple of knots and it's 4.5s.
strange place, but i loves me some happy hour @ his lordships watching the late sailers' monkey business outside the window. |

About the Berkeley sensor. In the summer when there is a deep cool (ie heavy) marine layer the wind is very stratified with the wind at the surface slowed by friction and the wind even 20-30 feet above being stronger since there is less friction especially at Berkeley where there is only water upwind. But in this pattern where there is lots of turbulence and and the wind is moving up and down a lot the effect of friction is weaker so the wind at the surface and at the sensor is much the same. Bottom line, expect the sensor to over read in the summer. |
That may be the case, but I don't remember these things happening five years ago. It seems like the sensor was fine, then went down for an extended period, and then it was all screwed up when we got the sensor back.
BTW, some cool pics from Berkeley 4/8/08...
