I live in Ridgefield, CT (Fairfield county) and I want to windsurf. The other day I went to Sherwood Island state park and was told by a cop that launching a windsurfer is not allowed in a state park. He sent m eto Compo Beach in Westport or Weed Beach in Darien. A permit is required at Compo, and Darien requires a $65 fee EACH VISIT to their beach for out-of-towners. Compo has season stickers for nonresidents that cost over $400 (and are sold out). Oh, and they don't allow any recreational equipment that is mounted outside your vehicle.

Where can I go???

Frustrated,

Have you considered windsurfing on the Hudson River? There are lots of nice, free places to sail in Westchester County that you could get to in 45 minutes.

In CT, there's Norwalk Sailing School in Norwalk. They have a club you can join (I think $50/year) that gives you a pass to the beach. I've heard of people windsurfing in Candlewood Lake, too.

Definitely try Norwalk CT. Calf Pasture beach is the name of the park and if you join the club they will give you a seasonal sticker for your car and you can use their rigging and launch areas/ They have a cold water shower there too. I live in lower westchester NY and didn't join last year but plan to this year.
The people are friendly there and its a pleasant place to sail out of but the wind is usually pretty bad there in the summer unless you happen to hit a good day.

you can sail off the old saybrook town beach off season and off the beach right next to it (gravel road is a little hard to see but its there) called Harvey's beach. there are lifeguards there in the summer but just say away from the swimming area and they won't bother you - they let kiters there too. i don't sail in CT often in the summer since there isn't any wind and spend most of my time in RI or on cape but when its windy it can be excellent! even some nice wind driven waves on the sandbar. parking is $10.

Hi Will, I'm about to relocate to Ridgfield Ct this summer, 20 did you find a good spot for windsurfing? I lived in Ca And just recently Nc where the beaches are free and endless Smile. Wow, i went to the beach with my kids during one of my visit in Ct and I noticed you have to wear "suite and tie" and pay tons of dollars to get in... Worried...

Thank y
