I will be camping near Mammoth Mountain in the next couple of weeks and I am wondering if there is any type of sailing in the area. If anyone has any input that would be great.

There are some ponds just south of Bishop off 395. Just about were those big satelite dishes are(deep space listening array). It's a little dirt road to get to them, if you blink you'll miss it. I sailed there last September, it's flat water, about a 1/4 mile reach and I think you need some kind a weather push(front of some kind). The water was warm and light green and a few jet ski's. I've heard you can sail lake crowelly but it's cold and eratic winds. Good luck

I have been at Twin Lakes (Mono Village) a number of times when it was blowing for 5.0. I think these were gravity winds.

Check out June Lake. I was there a few years ago and it was blowing pretty consistently but I didn't have my gear with. Guess 5.3 and 80l ish.
Take the first exit for 158 (June Lake Loop) coming from Mammoth or the second exit for 158 coming from Lee Vining. I think it's thermal winds there...heaviest in the am and pm.
Mono is sailable too...I think but pretty salty.

I saw a guy 2 years ago wound out on a 3.7 in this little pond off of Benton Crossing Rd (turn off 395 at the church). We were hot springing on this windy september day when I looked over and saw this sail zipping back and forth across the sagebrush. The guy was ripping laydown gybes right against the shore. When he got off the water I talked to him and he said that strong winds like that are typical. The water was completely flat. It also blows at Twin Lakes up by Bridgeport.
