To worry about the fannies, and their small billion subsidy, misses the point entirely. Sub-prime (that is, high risk) mortgages went from a $50 billion a year business to a $700 billion a year business after the Glass-Steagall Act was repealed. That bill, of course, was largely written by Phil Gramm, who ran McCain's campaign until he called us all whiners and got cashiered. Ron Paul is correct that the easy availability of money was the fuel behind that effort, and he is also right that the fed fueled this with easy money policies, and those end up with a devalued currency. The fuel was poured on beginning in 2002, some suspect to make sure that the economy was running on a rich mixture when Shrub--and all the other folks--were up for reelection. Ron Paul is also at least somewhat correct that you need some market corrections to recreate growth if money isn't dirt cheap. Logically, that has to be a deflation in home prices--as we have seen. But I differ with him on the full market solution idea. We have had a hybrid market, like it or not, for decades. He can neither get the votes for no intervention, nor convince me (and the majority of Congress) that the crash would not be more severe than it has to be.

On the other hand, the true value of the American system has surfaced in the last week. The Conservatives, who I disagree with on social issues, have stood fast for the concerns of the Country. Although many give lip service to Main Street, the Conservatives have actually been walking the walk. A better bill will result.

Anybody up for a good puff or two? That might lead to better path than we've been following for some time now. The ignorance and stupidity is simply beyond belief.

But somehow intelligence doesn't matter. As Governor Arnold says, issues don't matter in elections. That's what Karl Rove taught...

As we wind down the Karl Rove era.... I ask , how are we doing today? or the last 8 years, or the last 4years. it was 4 years ago when W said"I just earned political capital, and I intend to spend it". Well , today it would be nice if he still had that political capital, the country could use it.
