If you are staying for a week, I would recommend a rental house. Off season rates are pretty cheap.

If you like sound side sailing, and given our predominant NE wind this time of year, you may also want to check out Hatteras Cabanas. They are fairly new and are located at the north end of Hatteras Village. I heard they are pretty cheap, and are located on the ocean front. Also, you are about 500 yards from Izzy's Inlet, which has paved parking and is a great soundside or ocean side launch, specifically for NE wind. Plus if you are into wavesailing, you are on the south side, which offers the best locales for side off conditions, per NE wind.

Only down side, if you want to sail Canadian Hole, you are about 15 miles (20 min drive) from that spot; however, I see more and more windsurfers, and kiteboarders at Izzy's sound side these days.

For proximity to Canadian Hole, why not consider Buxton? Last year I stayed in Cape Pines hotel, and I was totally satisfied with my room. Not luxury living, by any standard, but not camping either. Short drive to the Hole, and the major plus was they offer wireless internet. They rent small cottages as well as standard hotel rooms.

It's not a WS institution by any means. There is one very nice (and more expensive) B&B in Buxton on the sound side with a launch.

Avon Motel is a kind of dump... (dark, damp. rundown)
Drive through it's parking lot to access another series of rental units.
I don't know the name offhand, but they rent apartments in small
cottages and they are well maintained for the most part.

The Avon Motel was fine when the rate was $39 a nite now it's 2X that and more worn.

I've stayed at the Franklin Motel- still so-so. For 2-3 nites .I shoot for the Comfort Inn in Buxton.

For better Resturants and nite life I stay up in Nags Head. Not all that many WS'rs so the launch at Windmill isn't that buzy.
