So how would you attach the bowline of sailboats?
Did you know we're talking about the MIDDLE dock? Not the East dock, not the West dock.
Did you notice the big CRANE at the middle dock area? It's mainly for SAILBOATS.
Yeah, pretty scary distance from the water to the top of the dock, maybe 14-16". That's one huge obstacle for those of us who think windsurfing is supposed to be a sport and we're supposed to be athletes.
Since the mid dock gets removed mid Nov and replaced each April, sometimes May, making it longer just doesn't make sense. The reason it gets removed is the pounding that particular area gets from high tides and some winds, either S or SW. Adding a longer section would just make the pounding more pronounced, thus making it weaker overall.
Yes, extending the E and W docks do make sense, but they won't even consider it, the way the politics and the city reasoning goes.....
Since we're dreaming, why not make the dock right at water level, similar to Embarcadero Palo Alto? I always just slog right onto that 9" dock and step off the front upwind side of my boards, whether 75 or 84 liters. Dry entry, dry exit.
And yes, some of those regulars down there complain the dock is too high and unwieldy even with their board as floatation devices.

It would definitely be SWEET to get the launch at his lordships cleaned up. Not that I'm a local, but I bet I could speak for the 'bigger' sailors, that launching at berkeley is a lil' lamesauce when it's windy enough for small gear on the outside.... but not windy enough to have any hope of schloggin my 85 liter board on the inside. HisLordships FTW - then back to the club for beers afterwards

He's in Spain right now.....
At 220 lbs., and 115 Joker, you do the math.
Dat udder feller, at around 165, uphauls his 78 liter wave board.
Dis old fart can't uphaul 84 at 150lbs. Well, one easy, one impossible.

Here’s an update that I got from Peter Kuhn of Cal Sailing Club. 1) The City has a grant from the State to replace the middle dock only, with a new 120' x 10' dock. The amount is $90,000. The City
also has money from an insurance settlement on storm damage to the other docks, about $130,000.
2) The City engineer has expressed an interest in a concrete dock, which would be capable of staying in place during the winter without damage. That dock would be about $145,500, and would be higher off the water as part of the design to withstand winter storms.
3) the cost of the pilings is largely for mobilizing the pile driver, so
the City will combine the pilings for this dock with other docks in the
marina, thus saving money. It may be possible for the City to replace pilings on the other piers if costs are low enough.
There are options for additional funding through the Water Trail, and I am encouraging the City to apply for grants to cover any shortfall.
Cal Adventures and the windsurfers previously told the City, through the Waterfront Commission, that we need a wider dock so windsurfers can walk around the stays of moored boats. With a ten foot dock that will be achieved.
I will make sure that any comments (on task) on this web site, or at the meeting next Wed. are considered, and will continue looking for funds.
