I too agree on legalizing drugs but we in amerika do things incrementally rather than one large fell swoop. So, we should start with the obvious; mary J, and see how it works out in our particular culture. MaryJ is less dangerous than alcohol in almost every way. Tough laws on unlawful dealers-nothing for small users, taxes etc. Buy stock in Oreos etc |

My apologies capetonian for the attitude. Sometimes I find the views and generalizations formed by some folks regarding casual recreational drug use a bit over the top. However, there are limits to everything. Hardcore addiction involving certain drugs is unquestionably a problem for society, but I guess it really comes down to how society addresses the situation. When one considers where our tax dollars go, I can say without a doubt that the criminalization and incarceration path that the government has followed for some time is a very poor investment. Overall, I feel much as you do about dealing with the issue. Also, I'd much rather change the paradigm and spend money on education and opportunity as a strategy to curb hardcore drug use, and direct the activities of addicts to a more productive path. |
