What is the minimum wind speed would you need to go WindSurfing on Sunday instead of watching the Super Bowl?

I can record the game; I can't record real life.

<5 knots... I don't care for American Football. But when the World Cup rolls around in 2010, it'd have to be in the 15 knots (it's a lot for a light wind sailor for me)

12 mph & 60 degrees should do it for me. Less then that and I'll go for a nice bike ride.

Funny thing is I coach high school football and I like to watch college football. But I lost any interest in pro football years ago. The game takes to long and has too many commercials. Boring.

That's a great school coach. My son windsurfs, full waterstarts, but really wants to play football at Oaks Christian. He turns 12 this week, and practices at Oaks. What a great bunch of boys you must be working with.

How can we get these young men into windsurfing. I'm doing my best to take my sons friends out on the water down here! Most of them just want to play video games.

Thanks Steven. It is a great school. I’m glad your son is interested in football. It is a unique sport in that there is only one game a week and only a 10 game schedule so every game means more then in other sports that have 25-30 contacts per year. I get between 75 and 80 kids playing for me every year practicing in 100-degree heat wearing full equipment. So if they are willing to do that I’m not so sure they are just video game kids.

As for getting kids into windsurfing, the biggest problem here is opportunity. Sherman is over an hour away from where I coach and the local lake where I teach at only has lighter wind at best. No chance to learn how to use the straps or waterstart at the CSUS Aquatic Center where I teach beginning windsurfing. For the kids to progress in windsurfing requires them to get to Sherman which falls on their parents. How many parents are going to be willing to drive that far just so their kids can sail?

Just keep encouraging them and then some day when the opportunity arrives, who knows?
