Hey y'all,

I've been sailing a superfreak sail the past 2 seasons and I love it. I've been thinking about trying out the Maui Hot Sails super model boom with it.

Any of you tried this boom yet and what do you think of it?

I like the idea of it being super narrow.
And mostly like the idea of getting a new toy!

I did sail a Supermodel once with my Superfreak. I posted about it here:

http://www.hotsailsmaui.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2106

Some of the followups may be of interest to you too. From memory, it felt light and easy to manage in sail flips. If you're in the bay area, you should check with BoardSports School, either at Coyote Pt. or Alameda. They might have one you can demo.

I ended up with a Maui Sails boom because I got a good deal on one. I like it alot, but on a 5.5, if feels a bit noodly.

Steve,

Your comment about your Maui Sails boom feeling noodly with a 5.5 surprises me a lot. I've owned a MS carbon wave 170-230 for nearly two years now, and I find the boom to be very stiff, even when using it on my 7.1. Is your problem related to any telescoping of the rear end, or is it overall flexing like an aluminum boom? If it's the former, you might want to remove the clips from the boom arms and take a look at the two holes on each arm. If there is any oblong nature to the shape of the holes, that's causing the problem.

i don't know about the super model boom but my 5.5 superfreak seems to want a wider boom than a fully battened sail. maybe it's just me but unless i rig it really flat it rubs a little on my hpl boom. anything narrower would be worse. it might be different with smaller superfreaks.

they sure look cool, though, and that's what's really important.

There is a known issue with the MS carbon wave. I've seen stuff written about it on their forum. It involves the boom ends being able to move a slight bit with respect tot he front. The clamps are a bit loose I guess. Under sail, I experience a noticable "clunk" when I pump the sail. It's hardly noticeable on a 5.0 or less, but moreso on the 5.5. I also notice that I can press down on one side of the boom and it will distort a bit. boom goes down on the side you push down and up on the other side.

Regarding the "clunk", I have some very specific conclusions about that, of which I generally identified in my prior post. However, I'm a bit confused about what's going on in your final sentence.

Overall though, if you want to learn a bit more about the "clunk", send me a PM, as I might be able to offer some pertinent information that may help you understand what's up, to include a possible direction to improve the situation.

We have demos of both the Maui Sails boom as well as the supermodel. We'll be opening up next weekend if the weather cooperates. If you'd like to demo either or both booms, just call/email us ahead of time so that we can reserve the boom/s. We can also deliver it to the location that would work best for you to pick it up.

Cheers (and pray for wind!)
