I have been using a helmet for the last 3 years and yesterday it came of good use.
Sailing in overpowered 3.4 weather I decided to go for a jump on a steep little ramp, the second I took off a crazy gust hit me. And don´t really know what happened, some kind of weird catapult with a face-plant on top of my gear. Hit the side of my head on something very hard, don´t know what but i´m guessing the mast. Looked around me and all I did see were some yellow colors and then purple stars, so I crawled on top of my board and lay there for a few minutes until I felt ok to sail to shore.
Off course i´m not positive that the helmet saved my head but i´m sure happy I put it on my head before that session.. |

I got stunned by a blow to the temple of my helmet years ago. It's probably accurate to say I'd have been knocked unconscious and drowned without it, as nobody was nearby. My face guard has saved my eye and probably socket from certain destruction twice. Teeth. Nose. Lips. Pain. With a visor, add clearer view due to eye shading plus protection from cataracts, skin cancer, rain, hail, and sleet. Freedom to sail harder without worrying about all the above.
It's a no-brainer for me.
Now .. how come more people don't wear torso armor? Ya gonna save that for AFTER you break some ribs or bruise a kidney or liver? |

Actually i have been thinking about getting a torso armor. No such product is available in Iceland and the shipping expenses can be mad so I´m checking options of having a friend bring it over. Just have to find something that suits me. |

after a mast episode that left me dizzy, I have worn a helmet since 2001,
I assume you mean a vest for protection:
recent thread on the BOARDS UK forum

1 of the US versions is ProMotion in Hood River, like on the thread above, works really well for me in the ZIPPERED form, hardly know its there _________________ K4 fins

I started using a helmet after I watched Tom Curren surfing pipeline with one. I figured that if the best surfer in the world wears a helmet in a televised competition where everyone is watching, then maybe I should wear one when it’s really crankin’ and no one is watching. Plus, I like the idea that if I make a mistake…..I get to try again. _________________ Kansas City |

There are vests, and there are VESTS.
See http://tinyurl.com/8c25hkp .
A season later now, with no complaints. If I ever wear it out I'll buy another. |

I hear you on helmets (or "helmuts" as they're called on Craigslist), but what type is best for windsurfing?
I talked to the guy at the kayak store in Jack London Square, who had some advice, although he was of course a kayaker. His main comment was to ensure it had a tighter at the rear so it didn't wobble, and single impact versus "reusable" ones.
What are the pros and cons of various ones for windsurfing?
And while we're at it, my life jacket (nominally for water skiing it's labelled), does not work at all well with my waist harness, which I'm just starting to try to use, since the zipper comes down past where you'd want the hook to be. Should I look at some different jackets? |

Search the forum for helmet, helmut, safety, vest, etc. You'll probably find well >100 posts on the topic. |
