Looking to get a new fin to improve upwind performance in moderate winds. I would use it with the Kona 9.0. I have been looking at the the True Ames 48cm sweeper. This would be 2cm longer than the stock Kona fin. Suggestions appreciated. |

I have yet to buy something myself but here's the info I have. It seems that a straighter more powerful race fin of about 50 cm works well. The fin size range for the CarbOne is 46-52.
So I will eventually buy a thick and straight fin to enhance low wind performance as much as possible. The TrueAmes you selected would not be my choice. I don't have validated alternatives for you at this time. I can only tell you that Makani doesn't and will not offer a big slalom fin in PB.
The best thing might be to ask on the Kona forum? |

Blackproject offers only a freeride fin in PB, similar to the TA or MFC Liquid Pro.
I would go more for a MFC RC2 or Freerace, a Select S1 Slam or a TA Series 2000. I will be looking for a powerful fin, for lower end planing performance and wouldn't mind sacrificing some top end speed. I don't know which of these fits the bill. |

the Black Project Fin is similar to the original request a TA Sweeper. the TA 2000 is a race fin
This is for a Kona..? not a Formula board, so some compromise in a Non racing straightworward pointer , I would think would work, and be more easy to use turning.

To improve upwind performance, a different fin is needed. The Kona 46 is quite similar to a MFC Liquid Pro (I have seen them both first hand). They look similar to the BP and the sweeper. Having a similar fin 2 cm longer might not change things much.
I have a Kona One, I have similar weight to the OP since I use a 9.0 too and have the same problem with the stock fin. I feel underfinned and upwind planing in moderate winds is not great. Based on other Kona sailors comments, I will find myself a race fin as described previously, not sure which one tough. |

if upwind performance is the" primary goal", you have something there, otherwise some compromise is necessary.
2cm in a fin that long is hardly noteworthy., yes
the shape OTOH is _________________ K4 fins

+1 on the MFC RC-2, which has a lot of power per centimeter. I used a 40cm. RC-2 on my Kona One and went 30.5 mph. They make them really big in Powerbox as well, up to 52cm., which can be hard to find. _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

You might want to check out the Tectonics F-8 Tomcat or Mirage course slalom fins. I have a 46cm Spitfire (an older version of the Tomcat) and a 50cm Mirage, and both of these fins offer solid windward performance, lots of range and balanced control, particularly at the upper limits. I have to say though that mine are both Tuttle based fins. While Powerbox bases are offered, it's not clear in their website if there is any limitation based on fin depth. |
