Anyone have or use one of these ? It says max 28cm....but from the picture online, it looks like you can go up to 32cm (two more holes beyond the 28cm)
Just wondering if i can get 30cm out of it...or is it too little exension in the mast at 30cm. Would hate to get the 48cm one. |

Always a question of risk reward, one only you can answer by factoring in your experience, skill, aggressiveness, weight, clumsiness, gustiness of winds, and at least a dozen other factors.
I know for me, 160lbs. sailing in sub 60 degree waters, usually at least 1/2 mile from shore, average swim skills but little patience, 35 years of shortboard sailing plus 23 years of windsurfshop experience, I'd never allow less than a minimum of 10" underlap in any of my booms. |

Boom extensions, it appears most use aluminum. I've seen 3 alus broken and over 20 carbons break. |

Sorry....I thought I mentioned it in the original post.
I am looking at SDM extensions. Chinooks med has two more holes beyond the 28cm setting....
I don’t have mine handy to look at....(not even sure if it has the extra holes) |

You really need a minimum of 6 inches of extension to stick into the mast. Anything less is questionable. |

Pst 3 was for base extensions. Anyone who had to deal with warrantees would remember all the broken carbon base extensions.
Very few racers use them. Freestylers can because they mostly under downhaul their sails to use smaller sizing. |

The extra holes above the marks are there because the SDM collars now have 3 rows of pins. Its a single flexible piece of plastic, the mast compresses the the collar over the upper rows of pins. If you used the old style collars with only 2 pins (1 row), you could get more extension, but less mast extension inside the mast, maybe a bit risky. The newer rdm collars have 2 rows of pins (4 pins), using an old style pin collar allows you to decrease the minimum extension 2 mm, no way to increase the maximum extension.

Not a big surprise. You would be crazy to do so.
If you have a broken mast laying around cut the top and bottom to make you a small extension to place on top of your mast. |
