I think what you need to do is rig bigger, probably by a meter at least,
and then deal with the extra power by tuning.

I have an 131 Xcite Ride (never seem competent enough to sail it reliably). A 160 Bic techno with no daggerboard (more stable for me; easy uphaul, waterstarting, larger sail sizes) and the Exocet WindSUP (stable as a sailboat, handles big sails, can practically sail straight upwind when needed).
I just need more time on the water with all of them i guess . |

By the way, you also have board I am considering (windsup 11 and a board that I have (Bic Nova 165 heavy version of Bic 160). Bic Nova is my desperation low wind board I use with Ezzy Zephyr. Bought it mainly to teach my kids and as low wind desperation board. Kids want to paddle too, I might want to play around in sloppy Great Lakes waves on certain light days, so I am considering windsup 11 8 bamboo version. But I still want nice low wind planing performance, fast strapped in feeling at least equivalent to Bic Nova (which is just barely OK). In good powered up conditions, do you get as fun a ride on the windsup 11 8 as your Bic 160? |
The WindSUP is awesome! It is indeed large. And as such heavy. But it really is responsive. I can do a little wave sailing (up and down small waves and swells). I can get in all straps which can feel odd on such a long board. And, i use it alot for SUP. Its not even a fair comparison to the Bic. I use the Windsup infinitely more and would pick it above the Bic anyday of the week. I though the Bic techno would be an all purpose larger short board. But in reality i think its just a confused board. Haha. |

Ah ha... so you "really" have 3 boards!!
That sounds like a very nice set, for you. And with the added info... I don't think you need a "new board" at all. I agree with others... more and more practice, will be best. There are no short-cuts in this sport, we all have to put in the time. But it's the challenge and the journey, that's fun.
And as far as "planing down wind and getting stuck there".
DON'T DO THAT, haha!
I always teach students to, sail upwind for the first couple reaches every time you go out. When you're confident you can do that, and sail back to your launch. THEN, you can sail farther up wind... and then try to plane back down wind. Anyway the point is, don't sail downwind first... always sail upwind first.
Keep up the good practicing, it will all pay off |
Yes you are completely correct in your tough love assessment. I just need to stop typing and start rigging. Yesterday was awesome wind here in the northeast and no i could not get away from work. |

You know i think you are on to something here. The E-types i have have phenomenal wind range. I should rig bigger and tune. ***light bulb!!!*** |

That kind of makes sense for some short boards, but I'm not sure it makes sense for all short boards, or maybe it has to do with the type of sail as well? Another consideration would be one's experience with both types of boards.
I've only had my Kona for a couple of years now so my perspective may be skewed, but the stronger the winds & the rougher the seas the more comfortable I am sailing 9.2 & 10.0 with my Exocet Warp 100 vs. my Kona.

coach, steve and i tested the 9.8 kona sail approved modifications in winds of 15-25. it just got better and better as the wind came up.
i have sailed the 11'5" long board into gales with either the 6.8 or 7.5 phantom sails numerous times. done some adventuring/excursioning to distant breaks with said kits. have you? _________________ www.aerotechsails.com
