Has anyone launched from TI recently? If so what is the situation? Is the boat ramp area launch available? |

you can do it, but requires a sketchy launch (jump) off the rip rap.
THen you've got a very sketchy exit, especially with onshore swells; best done with a buddy.
Ramp is in now in fenced off area, not easy to get to.
May try launch from sea front facing City, but exit is still tricky.
Overrall, not a convenient or safe launch anymore.
Heard that the Navy work may finish in August, so pray for late winds Sept/Oct again! |

Mums the word, but you can head along the north shore of the island back toward the city and pull into one of a few larger residential parking lots located behind the northern most (coastal) row of apartments. There are gate openings that let you onto the frontage road and rocks. Rig quick and hop in before anyone stops you. Don't tell anyone!

any updates on TI access? It looks like wind has been pretty good at TI this weekend, just wondering if anybody went there. |

launched from the prison (13th and N), let the ebb tide drag me to the windline. coming back i ended up pulling board and sail across half a mile of rocks. there's an odor reminiscent of human waste and the water is suspiciously frothy. also, someone mentioned plutonium, but i sailed near Hanford in the 80's so my dna is obviously already recombined. |

Found a navy website that list documents concerning Treasure Island, first link on this page is a pdf that describes clean up procedures, sites and timelines for the island. Looks like there was a minor Bromine-82 spill years ago, no Plutonium.... |

For all of us who were involved last winter to try and preserve access to TI and lost the battle with the Navy, or anyone else interested.
A notice came in the mail regarding an information meeting on Wednesday July 11, 2007 from 6-8:30pm at Casa de la Vista Building 271 Avenue of the Palms. It seems they are doing a public meeting on the progress of the cleanup and an updated project schedule.
Hopefully some of us can attend and report back. Maybe September sailing at TI could happen after all. Hope to see you there.
Cheers, Tim |
