I plan to go in august with the family, hence: is there a place to stay that's directly located on the water?

Another factor is that there are train lines on both sides of the river. Any accomoation near the river is noisy and if you are a light sleeper stay away. |

Riverside Lodge in Stevenson is on the water & very nice cabin type lodging. I'm sure they have a website. Large grassy area to rig in (Bob's Beach) & a good place for the family to hang. Not the windiest place to be in the gorge, but August is a wind crap shoot anyway. Possible easterlies would make Stevenson the place to be. Also a nice little town with great beer and nice restaurants within walking distance and away from the Hood River mess.
As noted in another reply, there is a campground in Home Valley. A little store & cafe, nice swim beach, ball fields and not much else. The sailing is okay (pretty flat) but also good in easterlies. |

Maryhill is plush and has camp and RV sites on the river. Also ceililo, "The wall", Peach beach, Roosevelt, 3-mile... |

Nobody has mentioned the Best Western right at the HR bridge. Its right on the water...not that you'd want to sail there, though! They have a little beach suitable for total newbies, but thats about it. Lots of bridge, freeway, and train noise too, but a very convenient location... |

If you have kids, watch out for the poison oak at the sailing sites, ask sailors or the park ranger what it looks like. There are areas where it is growing quite high at Doug's, Rowena, Viento and parts of Maryhill. If you take some of the very nice short hikes with kids, you can find it along the trails too.
Leaves are shiny some are getting a red tinge, and the leaves grow in 3's. At Viento, they line both sides of the path and are at grass level where it has been cut down. It grows up to 3' -4' high. Rowena is pretty clean, but you will see it all along the road on your way to the park - don't stick your hand out of the car windows. Hatchery has it scattered around, but most of it is out of the way.
If you have dogs, they can pick up the oil on their fur. |

And it (lumping poison ivy with poison oak) is morphing into a wider range of colors and shapes . . . some now has 4-5 leave, for example. Its oil is also far more potent this year.
