Your quick, early improvement is primarily neurological: the nerves that fire the muscle fibers adapt very quickly to new challenges, invoking more muscle fibers than before. That's a good thing, as firing more muscle fibers increases our strength and spreads the load over more muscle, helping to prevent injury to them. Don't be disappointed when your quick neuro progress slows or even plateaus, but a) it is a real and sustained benefit, b) it can still be improved further, and c) the next step is actual muscle size increase.
