Where is a good place to sail when the Santa Ana winds start blowing?

if it is a really strong Santa Ana try Lake Perris.

This link seems pretty accurate for wind speed ( at least it seemed to be right on last time I sailed there)

Leo goes off as well I hear.

Do they still close the lake if it gets too windy? I had that problem several years ago.

Port Hueneme in the morning is the spot for Santa Ana Winds. However, the wind is practically straight offshore, so it's mindful to ensure that your equipment is sound. Also, your ability to stay tight to windward helps greatly.

Occasionally, the NE wind makes it to C Street, but it's important to be watchful for a very quick shutdown.

One thing to watch for is the change in wind direction to W in the early afternoon. C Street oftens gets a nice westerly thermal push on these days, even after a strong NE morning session at Port Hueneme (or even C Street). Unfortunately, the opportunities are not always a given, but it happens enough to warrant one's attention.

I was there last season and it was 4.0-4.2 all day on a Saturday and the rangers did not close the lake nor did they bother enforcing the life jacket rule. Only 4-5 people sailing so I suppose they figure we know how to take care of ourselves.
