As a result of oil spill clean up operations, the beaches at the GGNRA, including Crissy Field, are closed for water access. Right now they have a lot of clean up boats operating around Anita Rock, so beyond the fear of sailors getting slicked, they probably want room to maneuver. It looks like they have used oil booms to some of the oil up against the beach between the old outfall pipe and the main launch area. Luckily, the spill was limited to a few hundred gallons after a large container ship side swiped the concrete barrier protecting one of the Bay Bridge towers. It is likely that they may continue the closure tomorrow to remove contaminated sand. If the closure continues past tomorrow, I will update again.

Thanks for the info Peter. Saw stuff on the webcam this afternoon and wondered what was going on.

The spill is now reported at 58,000 gallons which makes more sense given the number of skimmer boats that were in action and the amount of booms laid out. The Crissy Field Beach is heavily fouled and they have the oil trapped there right now. There are also slicks at beaches outside the Golden Gate and at Yerba Buena Island. Expect closures to continue for soem time and for more areas to be affected as the oil moves with the tides.

The oil has hit ocean beach, too. Went for a surf in perfect glassy conditions and ended up paddling through oil slicks. Put a quick end to what was looking like a perfect day Sad

Latest CG update says Crissy and OB have reopened. Don't know if it means access to the water. The containment booms are still in place at Crissy. Question

"The following beaches have been closed for public access until further notice:
Aquatic Park
San Francisco Municipal Pier
Fort Point
Baker Beach
China Beach
Fort Baker
Mile Rock Beach
Kirby Cove
Rodeo Beach
Tennessee Valley
Muir Beach
Angel Island
Ocean Beach is currently open, and Crissy Field has reopened." Question

Below my text is the info for three sessions for volunteers to be held Saturday in SF, Marin, and Richmond: Informational Sessions on Oiled Wildlife Care Offered / Public Can Learn How to Help With Oil Spill Recovery Effort

I spent about 7 hours today working at the Command Center though my role in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. There is a lot of enthusiasm to help on the part of the public and a lot of concern on the part of agencies that well intentioned people will take actions that creates unintended problems or results in health risks. Among the concerns is the question of proper disposal of any oil are tar collected. Organized response teams have disposal methods that mean the toxic materials ends up in the right place and not in the local land fill.

Because Ocean Beach was not closed, I think the ad hoc clean up efforts that occurred there today were less controversial. It sounds like SF City staff may be cooperating with the Ocean Beach clean up but the National Park Service seemed not to be advise awar of it.

Beach and water closures as of this evening included all other SF beaches down to Candlestick, East Bay Beaches from Alameda up to Pinole, and Marin Beaches up to China Camp and out to Muir Beach with some advisory at Stinson as well.

The Department of Fish & Game has scheduled 3 informational sessions tomorrow to let people know what they can do to help and hopefully how they can get ultimately get additional training to reach the level where they can participate as part of an agency sponsored response team. Ultimately, if people want to really make a difference at times like this, it helps to have already been gaining experience with a group like the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the Oiled Wildlife Network, or the Marine Mammal Center.

Informational Sessions on Oiled Wildlife Care Offered

Public Can Learn How to Help With Oil Spill Recovery Effort

SAN FRANCISO – Three workshops will be conducted to provide information on clean up and wildlife recovery following an oil spill. The public is invited to come learn about wildlife care and oil removal operation, and what they can do to help with the effort.

The classes, offered by the Department of Fish and Game’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) in cooperation with the City of San Francisco, the Headlands Institute and the Harbor Master at Richmond Marina, will be on Nov. 10 in San Francisco, Sausalito and Richmond.

The two-hour classes, “Informational Sessions on Wildlife Care”, will provide information on the oil spill clean up activities of OSPR, the Oiled Wildlife Network (OWCN) and the International Bird Rescue and Recovery Council (IBRRC) following the release of 58,000 gallons of oil into the San Francisco Bay from a damaged cargo ship.

The cargo ship COSCO BUSAN struck a support tower of the San Francisco Bay Bridge on Nov. 7.

Each class will cover the following topics:

- What is OSPR and why was it formed

- How cleanup is conducted

- How wildlife recovery and rehabilitation addressed

- How the public can get training to become more involved

- What areas and activities the public should avoid during the cleanup

- How the public can report wildlife impacts

The three classes will be held at:

- 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, 99 Grove Street, San Francisco, CA, Tele: 415.974.4060

-

- 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - Harbor Master Richmond Marina, 1340 Marina Way South, Richmond, CA Tele: 510.236.1013

- 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. - Headlands Institute, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Building 1033, Sausalito, CA 94965 – Tele: 415.332.5771

Glad you have been able to keep up to date peter. Any sense on the amount of time required to get the Bay back to working order?

My friend used to work buying gasoline by tanker-load from Japan. He says most japanese oil storage bunkers are offshore underwater "artificial islands". They used to have a lot of problems with spillages as a result of storms or whatnot in the past.

The coolest thing he saw is rapid spill response by dumping absorbent pads from airplane - oil has much less chance to get anywhere.

10kg pads - 180l of oil

well, it got everywhere, A buch os us just came back from Berkeley Marina helping with the clean up of oil from the rocks by the docks near Cal Sailing Club. It doesn't look good. Forget about absorbent pads like the ones in the picture, those are good for light hydrocarbons like gasoline which have more volatiles like BTEX. This stuff is heavy and as the high tide retrieves it gets deposited between the cracks and holes in the rocks, not easy to access for removal. I hope I'm wrong but this is going to take a while to get back to how it was before the spill. Biodegradation of heavy hydrocarbons may take decades.
