|
|
CGWA will offer classes and youth nites again this summer at The Hook for 8 weeks from Jun 23rd through Aug 14th. The youth nite sessions are from 4:30 to 6:00 on Tues, Wed, and Thurs. They are free and open to any youth who has taken a class or course (we mentor but don't teach at these sessions - take the class first). All our great beginner/intermediate gear (including boards, rigs, wetsuits, harnesses), has been donated to us by shops, companies, and CGWA members. It lives down at our sheds - ready to ride and rip - all you need is a towel and some drinking water. This is a great way to introduce your kids to the sport. (btw, I'm buying an ice cream at Mikes for every kid that throws a duck jibe this season).
The CGWA windsurfing camps are open to local gorge residents only - 1:00 to 4:00 Mon-Thurs - $90/week. Sign up at the HR pool, check it out. Lizzie, our new instructor this summer, comes highly recommended. Welcome aboard Lizzie. |

The Gorge only residents really limits the number of kids who will attend. We come up to visit our relatives and would like to have our son do a camp up there for a week.
Any chances? He's experienced in salt and fresh water, 11 years old but doesn't sail many days.
P.S. Those kids in the CGWA picture are both from Maui! |

CGWA takes money from people anywhere, but only local families can partake in some of their family events?
Why do you restrict events to locals only? From your webpage:
"CGWA has members in Oregon, Washington, and as far away as Europe. Help grow our membership- tell your friends why you like windsurfing in the Gorge, and send them to our Get Involved page.
Anybody can become a member of CGWA. By becoming a member, you will:
Improve local windsurfing launches
Make windsurfing fun with family and high-wind events
Receive instant discounts at several shops throughout the Gorge
Stay in touch with CGWA’s newsletter " |

I believe the week long kids camps are actually run by the HR Parks and Rec Dept. They only borrow the gear from CGWA. The "local" rule comes from them, not CGWA.
http://hoodriverparksandrec.org/windsurfing/windsurfing.htm
(please ignore the ancient gear in their old photos)
The point of the program is to provide an economical way for local kids to experience windsurfing, not to compete with the other kids camps run by the local windsurfing shops. |

As a year-round resident in the Gorge, I think its wonderful that HR Parks and Rec. has made some special provisions to help teach the local kids how to windsurf and do other things through the Community Education Program.
Growing up here, many of our kids are not fortunate enough to travel and learn a sport on vacation, and yet their families willingly support the development of waterfront recreation facilities, as well as funding many other seasonal-related costs, with their local tax dollars every year.
So, in effect, when you support local businesses in the Gorge through lessons or dinners or whatever you do, you help offset what it costs to keep the lights on here and make it possible for local families to also enjoy the recreation that you do in the Gorge.
Thanks for your support, see you on the water

Whats considered local. Have a summer address on Centerville Hiway up the road from Lyle. About 12 min from Dougs. Is that Gorge local or is a Hood River address required.

Local Shemocal. You are right, visitors have choices and if the Hood River politicians won't let our kids join in the camps we'll self teach our kids and split at dinner time. My family has always been saltwater types, but there is no finer place to bring the kids than the Gorge. We think it would be good for all the kids involved to be with other kids who love to windsurf. At my local spot, my son is the only youngun you ever see on the water. A total loner, what a bummer for our sport!
Do our sport and your town a favor and open it up to all kids. |

I'm with stevenbard. It's not right.
It's the residents only thing WITHOUT any other requirement. It's number 2 in the list for joining CGWA! Promote family events. This is just below the statement that CGWA is for anyone everywhere.
It doesn't say "your membership will help subsidize gear for non-charitable events that only locals can participate in".
The gear is paid by people joining CGWA with the idea of having events they or their family can participate in.
The camps aren't for disadvantaged kids (from anyhere), who can't afford the gear. That's a good cause. The only requirement is locals only.
At least let all CGWA members go to the camp or loan the gear to someone else. |

Hi Windsurfers-
Even though the CGWA youth windsurfing camps are limited to Gorge residents (Lyle included), there are other ways for windsurfers from anywhere to get involved in the youth program and other CGWA events.
- FREE Youth Drop-in Sessions (for kids from anywhere)
These free evening sessions are a chance for kids with prior windsurfing experience (one time on a board counts!) to hang out with other kids while getting more time on the water. Gear and supervision is provided, just bring yourself and some stoke!
Days: Tuesday - Thursday
Time: 4:30-6pm
Runs June 24 - August 14
- Kid-friendly Events
King of the Hook: August 9th, inside The Hook
This event is all about fun fun fun! It's for kids of all ages, including local rippers Rob Warwick and Wyatt Miller. Registration is free, costumes are encouraged, and all kids who enter get a prize!
Windfest Weekend: June 28-29, at the Event Site
This weekend is full of gear demos, clinics, and lessons, and is a fun way to meet other windsurfers and try new gear. It makes for a good family-friendly weekend at the beach. Also this weekend is the legendary Pray for Wind Party at Cathedral Ridge Winery (fun for kids and adults!).
Gorge Freestyle Frenzy: Wind window starts July 6th, at The Hatchery
This event is run by Royn Bartholdi, local windsurfer and event coordinator, and supported by CGWA. It is is a North America Qualifier for Prokids Worlds. Last year Kai Lenny and Berndt Roediger rocked the kids division. This is a fun and inspiring event for kids (and adults!).
To clarify, CGWA partners with Hood River Parks and Recreation to offer the youth camps (Mon-Thurs, 1-4pm, $90); this partnership limits the participants to Gorge residents. We are glad to provide this affordable opportunity for the local community to learn to windsurf in this world-renowned destination. This year CGWA hosted a clinic for 24 Big Brothers and Big Sisters to try the sport, and, despite the cold weather, we all had a great time on the water!
We invite all windsurfers who live in the Gorge or who pass through it to participate in our many other events and programs throughout the summer, and to enjoy all of the great beaches and activities that this region has to offer.
Sail on (now that there's sun and wind!).
-Katie Crafts, Director, CGWA |
