Change of scenery is always nice and Hood River is a sweet little town to hang out in for a little while. All-in-all though I think it's hard to beat SF for quality of windsurfing and variety.

Andy-Life is really good in your neck of the woods. Even without wind, chilling in the Gorge is a real treat and I always feel recharged after my trip up there. Great people, great town, etc. Believe it or not, I even enjoy the drive now.

A little more urban down here and that wears on you after a while. I think weaving the windsurfing into our lifestyles keeps a lot of us from losing our minds.

I know what you mean, I stayed downtown SF for vacation a couple months ago and needed a vacation from my vacation when I got back. Had a blast and loved the City but at $35 bucks a day to park your car downtown (offsite) on top of everything else, i had to refi the house, LOL.

Hi,

Just moved to the area, I was wondering if any other 170-175lbers could tell me what the best B&B sail size is for the bay?

A 5.0 is about right for me in 20-25? Is that the ticket? Would a 5.2 or 5.3 be better? Can you get away with a 4.7?

Thanks in advance...

good move dude! I moved here 3.5 yrs ago and never regret it a single day. The windsurfing here is amazing. My buddy, Rich, and I always say: if we were allowed to only pick one board and one sail, we'd have a 95L FSW and a 5.0.

But, you can never get away with just one sail, not anywhere. You need at least 2: a "light" wind and a "strong wind". At 200lbs dry, my 2 sails would be (if I could only have 2) a 5.3 and a 4.7 simmer Icon.

However, sail-size is also a function of windsurfing-level, board size and local conditions. But, since you're 170-175lbs, I'd say a 5.3 and 4.7 will cover most of your needs.

Throw in a 5.7 and a 4.2, and ur good to go for the whole year around the whole SF bay area (except for those few lightwind days: better stay home and score some points with da wife, and for the several "nukelar" days: be a man and deal with that OPed 4.2).

I hope this helps!

4.5 and 5.0 will do for most days at crissy. up a size for east bay and peninsula. nice to have a 4.0 for extra windy days and 6.0+ for not so windy ones.

i used a 3.8 once this year.

the gorge is nice for a lot of reasons but we might get more days around here because of the variety of sites. more days maybe but not hours. very seldom can we sail before 2PM except up in the delta.

I go to the Gorge because it is generally windier and warmer than down here and a great, relatively cheap (until $4.50/gallon gas showed up) vacation. The swell is pretty nice as well.

It's all about not pumping your own gas. If it weren't for that, most of us wouldn't bother.

There are so many spots to sail in the bay, so if you only have limited sail sizes, you can usually find a spot that neither too windy nor too light for your sails... although there are those days when it just blows stink everywhere.

Me: 165-170 lbs, fairly efficient, likes to be powered but can sail underpowered and have fun too... If I had to have one board and one sail, it would be a rangy 4.7 and an 85l freestyle wave or freestyle board. I would compliment this setup w/ a 5.3 and a 4.2 or similar size and that would cover most days in the bay during the meat of the season. Add in your 104l board, and you extend your range when the wind is less than 18mph or so.

My Bay quiver has 4 sails 4.5- 6.0 I have used the 5.5 the most. But I have found that I only cause myself stress if I care about the amount of gear I need.
