This is definitely a good question to ask. However, I don't think it can be answered in a paragraph or two. The currents are extremely complicated, and in my opinion, that's what makes Crissy so great. You can always find some interesting water to play on. Whether you like smooth water, ramps, or swell; it probably exists somewhere out there at any given time. To simply say "don't go on a flood" or something like that is to completely miss the beauty of sailing at Crissy. At first the currents can be mysterious or frustrating, but if you look at the contours underneath the water it starts to make a little sense. I say a little sense because even though I've study this for years, I still get surprised by some of the currents, both water and air. I've attached an image to give you an idea. I have a great PDF from the USGS that is very enlightening. Also, if you're really interested, you can visit the Bay Model in Sausalito and watch the tides change faster than real time.
