Does anyone sail at anyplace in Mass/ R.I. that has a really dramatic background, good for windsurfing photos? I'm looking for scenes like lighthouses, cliffs, large piers, cityscapes, massive bridges, shipwreck, or anything else unusual or interesting. The scene has to be shootable, with windsurfer in picture, from dry land.

I've attached a pic from Fogland as an example.

Thanks!

Scooper, there's a small rather unknown beach directly below Nobska light on the shore road to Wood's hole from which you can sail. It would offer a good shot of a lighthouse that is rather attractive. The parking can be an intimidating situation, but unless it's a big weekend, they don't tow or ticket. There's also a private beach house at one end which has people friendly to windsurfers. You may also want to look at the new Casino at the base of Falmouth heights. I have sailed there off of the beach. It's about the most picturesque architectural background on the Cape. Both locations are on Vineyard Sound. Long sands in York Beach, Me. lies to the south of Nubble Light. I've also sailed from that beach. Here's a view of the launch area.

You mean Nobska Beach, of course. One should be careful -- very strong currents and rips just off the lighthouse when the tide's running.

Brucie, why didn't you suggest Little Harbor with the Coast Guard base in the background? Or Great Harbor with WHOI and the MBL in the background? Or the Steamship Authority? If the ships are in, it would make a great shot.

And a shot from inside Eel Pond with the WH School in the background would be picturesque, though I doubt there's much wind.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . Question

Thanks for the ideas!

Nubble light looks really nice. Can you sail between it and the mainland? I was thinking it might work best in SW or W.

The Nobska light looks scenic but I'm not sure if I can get a decent shot, as background, from the land. Same issue with the casino. Maybe the beach curves enough to make it work from a good distance? I have a 300 mm lens.

Steve,

Here's a shot of Long Sands Beach a couple of months ago with Nubble light in the background. Southeast seems to work best here.

I was wondering if you could sail right from the Sohier Park parking lot, right near the lighthouse, but Long Sands looks like a really nice launch. Maybe I'll check both options out. Thanks!

Scooper, you can photograph both the Casino and Nobska from the land with a sailor in between. Nevertheless, the land is privately owned. However, in Ma. all land below the high tide line is public property. I am not technically knowledgeable about lenses so I don't know if you can find these vantage points can fit your requirements. However, I can supply two photos that might help. I am using a zoom lens.
