I sailed there for the first time a couple weeks ago. The wind was very light and I wasn't able to plane. It looks much better in this video. But I'm wondering about the wind direction. If Brooks island and the long spit/sandbar to the north of the island are shown in your video, then the wind must be coming from the east right?
Isn't that an odd direction for the bay?
I also thought the water would be very flat there, but the it appears to have voodoo style chop, and many of those looked like they'd be good launching platforms. |

Actually, the good wind directions for Pt. Isabel and the sand spit are S to SW. The wind comes over the sand bar and you sail in the lee... that's why it's so flat. Although, if you get too far downwind from the sandbar, the water gets voodoo choppy.
Sailed from Marina Bay today, and it seems like it was windy on both sides. 4.7 and 90l was pretty good for me... never overpowered... maybe a 4.8 or 4.9 would have been slightly better _________________ Kevin Kan

GoPro is supposed to be coming out with their own wide-angle lens this summer. They recommended an interim solution, but I honestly can't remember the details. |
the gopro camera is fun, I got some cool windsurfing footage with the head-strap attachment. You can also buy it from www.FaceLevel.com. |

Yes, behind the jetty was good yesterday. Nice high tide and good wind direction, as Kevin indicated. Best speed run in area IMHO (especially with my 7.0!). Only problem is getting thru that voodoo chop that is mostly where the shipping channel splits off and heads north. However, pinching up close to Brooks/pylons gets you through it fairly quickly - just don't hit the old pilings!
Looks like the jetty is really starting to erode though. The "passage" that tide/waves have cut thru is getting fairly large, with more effect/chop on the smooth side.

call me crazy, but I kind of like the swell of the SE end of the island. guess I should check out the speed sailing at the other end, though. |
