One has to only review the magazine offerings in the supermarket and drug store checkstands to see where too many folks are coming from. Certainly no intellectuals targeted in the crosshairs with the fanfare offered there. |

I'll have to plug the movie again, as its message parallels the theme of nealpar's post. If you haven't seen "Idiocracy", see it. Maybe I'll have a special screening this week at my house for those who can make it after what will hopefully be a big day of sailing? No need to RSVP, just keep it in the back of your minds, you Secos locals, rascals, and watchers of kilopascals.
While the movie is a bit goofy, and drags on a bit at times, it's gives us a serious message through its rather dark comedy. I've got the DVD ready to load, and a 30 pack of Colorado Cool-Aid ready to tip back. And best of all...it's Free!!! Whoopie!!!....And, there's nothing I like better... |

It's not. Except I'm already done with school, got a degree or two, so I have "earned" the right to play, act stupid and waste my time on anything I please.
These American kids, who don't know grammar, math, geography and history, will stand no chance against their peers from Europe, China, India, etc. That's the point. The truth hurts, I know. |

I believe "adults" have been saying "stuff" like this since the radio or especially the TV was available or even FURTHER back than that/ probably "like forever". However it has to be admitted that there ARE a lot MORE "distractions" these days such as even what we are doing here and as originally noted. |

And "kiducation" isn't the only threat. I'm firmly convinced the populace in general is being grossly misled by media bias. Sure, I could be among the misled, but just about every new direct observation reinforces my views.

We were activists in the late sixties and seventies. This exact thread was common material in the literature of the time.
Problem is -there was no internet to blame it on Stupid facts about celebrities of every kind ( John Wayne) were idolized just like today. Reading had gone south just like today. The chinese and Euro kids were "better educated" just like today.
Kids had gone narcissistic and media bias was the order of the day.
We are those kids. The internet brought a window on the world to many people. There is too much to know these days but we learned to look it up on the net and that is a great leap forward.
Today the electrician quit so I looked up how to pull wires through conduits with a fish tape and did half the job myself in one day. |

Nor will they stand a chance against those kids (i.e. mine) whose parents make an investment in their education, exposing them constantly to sciences, languages, history, and cultural experiences. You'd probably find there are plenty of engaged, intelligent parents who strive for the same things. And just like the population at large, they're outnumbered by the ignorant, illiberal, and dull.
To quote Judge Smails: "Well, somebody has to dig ditches." |

Your educated children can then look forward to being members of a nation of ditch diggers. |
