Thanks for the awesome pix! It was great at the WS bridge too. My first time this year sailing with kiters. They were totally responsible. One guy even flew his kite vertical when I couldn't get upwind of him. A real pleasure to watch the kiters rip it up!

I've never had a kiter ask or act like he expected me to avoid going under his lines. It's unavoidable in crowds anyway, so I just try to give them enough room so that if they want to jump while upwind of me, I'll have time to react and dodge them. Heck ... if no one could sail under their lines, there'd be no river available at many sites.

Back to the photos -- How the heck does Dale do that? It's not just speed; there's more to it than that. I've asked other high flyers for tips, but so far they can't offer much more than, "Just go fast and nail the ramps." Been there, done that, but it doesn't put me 30-40 feet in the air.

Maybe I should be thankful.

Thanks Mike! I finally made it in one of your shots....I think. Let me know if I can get a higher res version of the one with the barge and the red world sail surge....

Peace,

Dale rides a 4.2 Hucker sail that is customized for his high leverage sailing style. His Hucker has a reduced twist rate and is extremely firm on the leech. Once airborne and angled somewhat horizontal, his sail generates a much higher vertical lifting component, so he can float/glide/hang in the air longer.

Beyond that, its all DC. He is fearless when there is spray in the air.

Hi WMP,

Attached are the 3 shots that proceeded the previously posted photo of Dale jumping. All were taken fractions of a second apart. If you go to the web site mentioned above you can see lots of similar jumps. Dale's jump are incredible and do not need photoshop. These photos are right out of the camera except for some cropping.

"photoshop really helps boost big air too!"

I was watching Dale jump at the Hatchery last Wednesday. Believe it, Dale gets the big air all by himself--without the benefit of Photoshop.
