whats the best way to secure/tie down your outhaul line after cleating it. on a non adjustable setup. is there a profesional way to do this so it doesn't unwrap. |

It's the same as what you should do with your downhaul on a Chinook extention. There's a previous thread on this which makes it quite clear. |

The more you contributed to the thread, the less clear it became. |

Not close to "pro" here.....
But windsurfing since short boards were first used..
Always just wrapped it around the rear boom arm and tucked it once under like the second to last wrap..pull tight. Don't remember it ever coming off. |

Here's the professional way Wrap, terminate with Clove Hitch and stopper knot. Twist to snug it all up. I took some photos.

anacreon,
very nice. I do the clove hitch but hadn't thought of the stopper knot. very good idea.
now, if I could only keep my downhaul from coming out of the sail and laying on the deck I'd be all set. |

Dennis, tuck your downhaul line up into your mast base extension. This is much more effective than tucking it into the sail.

Hi Puffin,
For me, I like to have my downhaul line accessible for loosening out on the water. This has become necessary to get back in at times, and I'd prefer not to have to detach sail to get at the downhaul. Also, not all mast extensions allow feeding extra line inside. So for those who want/need the downhaul to be secured externally here's my method:

BTW I enjoy your blog!

Here is the method I've evloved to-
Many boom tail ends have an "extra" sheave or pass-through that ends up being unused depending on the way that you thread the outhaul. This is particularly true on booms that have the capability to use an adjustable outhaul. Once I've cleated off the outhaul line, I wrap the excess around the tail end or boom arm, leaving about 6-8" of outhaul tail. I pass the remaining outhaul tail through one of the open sheaves and tie it off with a figure 8 knot. Very clean and never comes accidentally undone.
