Anthropomorphize; To ascribe human characteristics to. This is perhaps the most classic example of all. We see a dog showing us his belly and think they want to be rubbed/scratched. What a dog in this situation is doing is showing you his weak side (belly) and pronouncing you superior to him in the pack. I do think they do like when we rub or scratch them then. Another is when they scratch after peeing/pooping as if "to cover" it up. what they are actually doing is spreading scent from scent glands in their pads of their paws over their waste. Lastly it is said that when you walk the dog he smells so acutely that as he sniffs his way along it is the equivalent to our reading the newspaper. As for understanding women above-I'm clueless there.
