Word to the wise...

Yet another reason why I haven't tried kiteboarding yet...

He was just trying to be like Danny Deckchair.

No harm in that.....

Thought crossed my mind once or twice.

As far as loftings go, that's a relatively minor one.....
Major ones you go UP 500', or 300', both caught on video tape.
Even in breeze as little as 12-24mph, loftings, usually considered "supermans", can have you 20' in the air and 200' horizontal distances using a "safe" sized 10 meter kite.
But motorcycle street riding, hanggliding, and extreme outdoor sports adventures can be a strain on your wellbeing also

Now days modern kites have a "depower" feature. You can drop onto the nice soft beach at 20 or 30 feet up BEFORE your body hits other people or buildings.

Excellent point you've made.....
Now since my car has airbags and seatbelts, I can just go crashing into concrete walls and lightpoles......
Since I'm wearing my helmet, I can jump really high and not pay attention to anything as I'm immune to any injuries.....
Since I've paid off my month's health insurance, I can do anything and jump off anywhere without any worries......
Have you ever TRIED to depower or dump the kite DURING a lofting?
Almost to way to get it done instantly, and a second later, you're up another 15' or so, giving you a fall total of .........
And consider....it's not always "nice soft sand" beneath us, is it?

Glad you could see what I was trying to point out. I saw this video on the national news. The kiter is in critical condition.
The news people were actually saying stuff like " how stupid is that" not "poor accident victim".
I felt sorry for the guy,I'd windsurf in a hurricane, but not close to kiters or buildings.
I hope no one on the ground was injured.

Fact is, after the first impact he should have let go... period.

Actually.......
Sometimes, the fear factor freezes the human mind and body..sometimes.
My best 3 loftings....couple high tide, 12-25mph breezes, about 300 horizontal feet, landing on a bicycle path at MarinaBay's windsurf launch measured around 12' above the high tide mean line. Yes, I was well above at zenith. Yes, I got the kite overhead and safe, nice soft landing. Yes, a solid lightpole and fence was 15' downwind of landing. Yes, a two story condo was 75' downwind...I saw only the roof at zenith.
But then, maybe better to try to control the loft.
One bud decided to catch and release my landing kite. He released straight up after slacking the lines. Nice loft horizontal 70', up maybe 15, landing as I got the kite almost overhead, smack dab against the side of a concrete outhouse. Dramayes.
Both, by the time I'd realized (maybe 1.5 seconds) that trouble could happen, I was well close to zenith and that nice soft landing would only have been possible if I'd get the kite overhead. In both cases, I cleared boulders from washer sized to computer sized, and landing there WOULD have been not good.
