Isobars,
Are you that simple and clueless here?
I suggest you go back and review your past comments here to pick up the path on this thread. I don't think I'm alone here in finding that you've been quite critical and heartless regarding the injured kiter. But maybe, you want to walk away from that and act like you said nothing obtuse or untoward.
But then again, I'm convinced that being accountable for your comments is something more than you want to do. |

Hi Keykocker,
What is the story on your partner? I see you indicated that he was killed kiting in 30 knot winds and in another post, I believe you have not been able to sell a kite since. So tell us the situation. He was obviously an experienced, knowledgable person. Might be a 'lesson learned' for us.
I am sorry for your loss.

R.I.P. All those who loose their lives on the shores of the Blue Yonder.
I think in the general scheme of things it is pretty childish to look at it from a Kiter vs Windsurfer perspective. |

Mike quit his lob as rocket scientist with NASA. He and his wife left on a trip to Argentina from California on a big BMW bike. Their friends threw a big celebration party for them joking that they might "Love travel so much they may never see them again"
They broke up in Cancun and he continued on to Belize alone, opening a windsurf school on Caye Caulker. A few weeks later she died in motorcycle wreck on Islas Mujeres. Devastated by this, Mike went to Fla. for a month and got certified to teach kiting as well. I was his only student. We meant to kite as a way to sail on too light days. The wind picked up that day while he was offshore. A Fisheries boat saw him but Mike refused help. It was his style.
He saw it as a challenge to practice kiting in higher wind. His athletic abilities were considerable and had taken a second in the National Championships. Standing in the shallows in front of his kite school with the kite in neutral he search in vain for the street drunk he supported who cleaned the shop and always caught his kite to set down. A tourist had given the guy money for a beer and he had left his post for a few minutes. Mike tried to put it down, a gust caught it just like in the video. He hit the door of the school and broke his neck.
We buried him in his wetsuit.
In a way there were two casualties. I saw the street guy just before I left for Maui last month. He excused himself because he had to go wait for Mike in case the wind picked up. He told me "It can be dangerous out there. You never know how fast things can change on sea, I got to always be ready to help my buddy." |

My only mention of him in the entire thread, and it regarded his ACTIONS, not himself, was, "he still did something extremely stupid".
1. You think trying kiting upwind of buildings in gusty, stormy winds is SMART?
2. Others said much more, and much worse.
3. GFY.
4. PLONK (for the uninitiated, that means I've killfiled Chandler, clearly one of the forum's biggest hypocrites.) |
