Saturday was light wind day at 3rd, but alot of wind-starved kiters giving it a go. Some small group was jet-skiing around in rapid circles at the lower beach landing area. While many seemed amused by their antics, I thought it was reckless and stupid. It's a big Bay with many better places to jet-ski. I really hope this is not a trend. Kiters and windsurfers already have their hands full avoiding each other. Adding jet-skis to the mix is simply an accident waiting to happen. 3rd Avenue is the pride and joy of Peninsula Kite Boarding. I would hate to see it ruined by a proliferation of jet-skiing.

I would appreciate others sounding off on this subject. Evil or Very Mad

A couple of jetskis early, then a couple of kite lessons with ski's-of course they are not a problem. I really don't think non kite related jet skis will ever be a problem there. Yesterday it was very light and very flat and even then they disappeared when the wind came up a little. The point is, Herd ave is just too choppy and windy for the regular jetskiiers; they will not be there on normal windy afternoons; they will find calmer waters.

I feel bad for you. If 3rd ave. goes the way of Lake Isabella, the yahoo crowd will take over. At the Lake we just don’t go on the big weekends. It’s sad but you put your life in their hands and after watching how irresponsible some of those jet skiers play, those are bad hands to put your life in. If you have any power to force them away from the sailing area I would exercise that power as quickly as possible.

I am not at all worried about this, even when it is slightly windy it is too choppy for jet ski's. They only appear on a dead calm day such as yesterday. Not to mention that parking and launching at 3rd is a realy challenge for these guys once wind and kite surfers fill up the lot.

I thought that the people using the jet ski were some of the kiters who use that beach all the time for launch and arrival. Am I wrong?
Also is it legal to use jetski there and so close to the shore?

Yeah,

I know the the guys. They are kiters. The guy that owns the ski is a kiter. It comes in handy. Rescues etc..........
No law against it. They are noisy though.

mpierce,
Isabella is way flatter than 3rd where you sail. Your problem at Isabella is unique because both spots that most people sail, the Auxillary dam and the Ghetto, are very close to the Aux. dam. Since the wind blows off the Aux. dam you have a very short fetch, thus flat water. Hello jet skis. That little bay is ideal for them and unfortunately there are no good launching areas on the other side of the lake where the wind would be more onshore and the swells bigger.

Yup, my brother (longtime surfer, non-windsurfer) and I had conversations regarding just this, a few years back. I was complaining about the kiters taking up too much "effective space" at Leo. The gist of the conversation was that it "started" with surfers being irritated with windsurfers for taking a lot of their waves from them. Obviously, when there's wind, a surfer can't compete for positioning with a windsurfer. Then came the kiters, who generally make quicker transitions but take up an incredible amount of "effective space" due to their outstretched lines, etc. As I mentioned, most windsurfers are a bit irritated with the kiters, as there's so much to watch for when you're approaching, passing, or being passed on the water. My brother my brother ultimately asked me, "Well, what are you guys going to do when the jetskiers come into the lineup to be despised by all others?" (It was a rhetorical question, by the way.)

You gotta fight, for your right, to jeeettttt-ski.

I guess it's just a natural regression, like so much else in modern life. It looks good though, and makes you feel macho (Better go that extra size up in your tighty-whities.) atop that pollution-spewing steed. What else really matters? Oh yeah, somebody makes a lot of money on selling them. Cool.
