I weigh 160 wet
I use and am comfortable in high winds on a Mistral FSW Score 85 but has a tight margin at 22-
I am Advancing into the advanced stages, technical Jibes, jumps with tricks added, proper shaka form ect.
I never cared about ebbs or floods, only what will work in both.
I have stayed with a 11' convert and gone to a 12.5 when I use the bigger sail
I have been using Gaastra pilots but this also may be the issue?? do they just suck? people tell me they are good all round sails on the lower-end.

As you get better your planing threshold will lower, but for now you probably would have been better off with a 115 liiter board or 7.0 sail with your 100 liter board. Your 6.0 with the 100 liter board probably has you going at 17 mph, 18 -19 for sure.

We all measure our windspeeds differently...
in 15-21mph breezes, minimum with an 85 score, a 5.8 sail should be quite sufficient for easy planing, little pumping, small jumps and pops, and hooked in cruising.
If you need more wind, you either rate wind differently or your skill level is still rising, allowing you to plane up with that wind later in your career.
I use a JPFSW84 in those conditions. |

The Pilot doesn't suck, but it's more of a price-point sail. Gaastra makes a good freestyle sail, and quite a few people I know freestyle with their Poison wave line (I do in larger sizes.)
There's an excellent weight/sail/windspeed converter that a scientist-windsurfer named James put together...I've found it exceptionally accurate, though of course it's possible to sail "outside" the numbers if you have the skill. It's available here:

James' blog FYI is here FYI
