What's up with the Rooster Rock sensor? On sunday it was reading 10 while Stevenson was high 20's. But on the drive out it was obvious that it was blowing pretty hard at Rooster Rock - as hard or harder than Stevenson. Plenty of white caps, sand blowing. Is the sensor located in a sheltered area? |

Straight off the sensor notes. I think this is accurate.
Sensor Notes
The wind sensor is new here (installed in May 2007) and is mounted to the roof at the east end of the park building. Jan. 1, 2008: reports from windsurfers out in 40MPH winds gusting to 60: it indeed appears that the gust reading at this sensor gives a fairly good indication of the average steady-state winds mid-river. May 30 2007: My observations over the last few days are that the gust readings on this sensor are close to the steady state winds on the river. (Only easterly wind observed.) |

The Rooster Rock sensor is part of the iWindsurf network.
It shows up on the "OR - Columbia River" and "OR - Gorge West" maps.
We did the best we could with regards to sensor placement - but there are a lot of restrictions due to CGNSA rules. Many thanks to Stuart Hill for doing the install.
Using the "gust" reading as the "average" works pretty well. Generally, I've noticed if the gusts are reading over 15MPH, then its sailable conditions at Rooster.

I agree with andymc's post. We were out at Rooster this past Sunday and it was cranking( 3.7-4.2) But the Rooster sensor was showing low 20s max. Same thing the previous week. |
