Ice sailing is still here and still a blast.
Once again Jeff Brown proves he's gifted on the ice.
On a warm day, on a wet lake, in winds gusting to over 30knts...
He shattered his own mark and set the bar a little higher.
64.6 mph, 56+ knts on a Freeskate! Shocked

This is scary fast, amazing speeds and deserves somes recognition.

Congrats Jeff, Rob Miles and Alex Wadson (new PB). Incredible !!!
I would love to hear a detailed breakdown.
"The Thunderbirds" do it again!

That is AWESOME!

What angle of sail does one go at for max speed on the ice?

What happens when you wipe out at 60+ mph?

You miss Leno, 'cause you're still sliding.

True that.. Very Happy
It's not as violent as you would imagine.
However, we do wear helmets and pads.
As in windsurfing, the idea is not to get catapulted while hooked in.
Well, that's the idea anyway. My King Pin sheared off at 40mph last
week, and the resulting crash was a spectacular yard sale. I ended
up 100 feet from my rig, but did catch Leno that evening.

As for the angle of sail... identical to windsurfing.
Check out the GPS tracks below on a 40 knt (Max speed) day.

Congrats again to Jeff for breaking the record.

Hey Dean!
Thanks for posting this news.
How about uploading that other cool shot, you know, the one with all the orange glow sunset!!!

So, folks are asking about the "angle" which I assume is the course angle to true wind for speed runs.
When sailing in 15-20knts, the angle of attack is about 120-130 deg off wind.
But when it gusts over 30knts and speeds are in the 60mph range, then the angle is insanely offwind at 140deg +!!!!
You get to mid 50's at 120 deg, then you hope you have the next gust of 30knts to accelerate you even more, get locked in, powered up, then bury it away from the gust. Speeds increase so fast, the burst must have some G's in it!!!
Shocked

its addicting to say the least.....

I'll do one better Jeff...
I post a link to a new HelmetCam video of the action on Long Pond,
just prior to your record day. Thanks to everyone who took the
time to photograph this epic day "On Ice"

Enjoy!

Big Congrats Jeff!!!

Those conditions are amazing -- we don't see ice like that around here (Wasaga Beach Ontario) EVER.

Keep up the good work!

Great job with the pic's and the fun. Speeds are fantastic too. I noticed that the body positions for trim are very upright on ice. If one were to sail like that on stickier water, I'm afraid that it would be very slow. I tend to hike way out, be on the rail, and sheet home harder with longer lines set further back. That's a huge difference between ice technique and water..... Just making sure that everyone knows that technques transfer is not exactly 1 to 1. Cheers.

I've seen Jeff actually laying his back on the ice at speed.
You need some steady wind and a closer (to the wind) reach, but overall
we are more upright due to being on a broad reach with TINY sails and
are able to close the gap without long lines and an extended body.

When the gusts come... we're out there, just like on the water.
(see the attached picture below... look familiar?)

Jeff could explain the differences better than I, but techniques are not so
different as you think, it's more due to sail size, lack of resistance from
the ice, apparent wind and the broad angle to the weather. If the gap
can be closed without hiking out, then we're good Smile

Being 6' 3" and standing on a long skateboard, with a 3.5 meter sail, not
wanting to die at 50 mph.... makes my stance a little more upright and
sphincter more uptight. But then, I'm really new (this year) to the
GPS speed circuit. In time I will learn from the pros and hopefully
improve my technique on the ice.

Right now, it's another fun and addictive thing to do in the winter,
while waiting for the warm spring winds. Cool

Dean
