He and his wife switched their product testing and review business to snowboards, then wakeboards, then houseboats. Same concept, more lucrative markets. Like Pete and Carol of the still profitable Gorge Guide, Michael and Kerry recognized that the local windsurfing media business no longer butters much bread. Last time I saw them they still lived in a beautiful home deep in a peaceful orchard in Hood River.
And lest anyone think Westender's war hero comment is in jest, his subject -- Michael Low of "3.5" -- not only volunteered to serve in the Army at the height of the Viet Nam war, but had to get a rare exemption from the Army's long-standing requirement that officers must be college graduates; he hadn't quite graduated yet. And he didn't just volunteer for the Army, he went in on one condition: that he be assigned to lead a front line infantry squadron deep in the jungle. He comes from a line of military men, and felt the calling. He put his life on the line -- and nearly lost it many times -- fighting world communism for the free world's benefit. That is heroic in any rational person's book regardless of the politics and ultimate realities of that particular war.
