Hi kids,

I really appreciate all the feedback on the thread below about my magazine. It really does help me to make a better mag! Just wait till you see the first issue of next year Wink

In the meantime, I just got a note from a reader telling me how much he liked the Rob Mulder piece, so that means at least a few of you have already gotten the next issue. If not - get your butt to a shop and grab it!

(Yes, feel free to use the rest of this thread to flame, insult, harass, vilify, castigate (not to be confused with castrate) or even, wind forbid, compliment me. But be nice to everyone else.)

My copy arrived together with note that it was my last issue if I did not resubscribe. I made the decision about two issues back not to renew. No one special reason, just that I didn't think I would miss it much, perhaps it did coincide with the micronesia article and global warming humor leaving out Al Gore.

I started way back with Windrider and guess I enjoyed reading about the things and people I knew ( North East, Hatteras, Gorge ), local racing, articles about the pros and industry people I had met or seen sail ( many at the various windsurfing shops ) , industry news, and even the ads that used to be there for shops in our local area.

I often kept the magazine in my van and read in small bits while waiting for the wind or for the wife while shopping. The equipment reviews used to be a major consideration in making board selections but seem now to serve mostly as a list for a starting point to research more on the web.

I may change my mind if I find I miss the magazine . I stopped subscribing to the New England Windsurfing Journal a few years back.

Josh,

great articles

great job on slightly less filler (there were only three pages, I think, of superfluous bs)

great job at integrating the beginner booklet into the mag this year (instead of handing the d*mn thing out to your friends, it's a lot easier just to leave it on the crapper for them to read when they come over to party (with your kids Wink ).

but, other than the beginner stuff in the intro2windsurfing pamphlet, where's the instruction?
I know we've been over this before but I've got to bust someone's balls every once in a while.

peace.

I don't miss my mags. They are more for the beginner-intermediate sailor anyway. I wish them the best of luck, though. Hopefully we'll see more beginners. It's a better mag than Boards which has a crooked, currupt staff.

That's OK, Joe. If you keep plugging, you'll reach beginner-intermediate level, and the mag will start to click for you.

Definitely, I knew someone would pick up on that. Sorry, but I'm in your class i.e. the over-the-hill, terminally intermediate one.

You got that right, Brucie, particularly the "over-the-hill terminally" part.

Have a great Fourth of July, Big Guy! Don't eat too much linguiça.

You say that today, Brucie, because yesterday they kicked you off their forum and deleted your "DanWebster" alias.

And for good reason.

Sour grapes.

BTW ---- the word is spelled corrupt.

Hater,

if you care to, I'd like to know which pages you thought were "superfluous" - a private message will suffice, or e-mail, or, if you'd rather, it's OK with me if you post it here. Go ahead, be specific - give me page numbers.

As far as instruction, I have a few ratios that I like to follow of travel/people/instruction/etc - and the beginner's guide took up a lot of pages. Typically, we like to offer beginner-friendly instruction in the summer (when more newbies are looking at the sport) and more core instruction (like the wavesailing piece) in the winter when more dedicated sailors are on the water.

I'm surprised you like the Beginner's Guide in the magazine. I liked the idea of subscribers being able to pass it along to a friend... although I'd like to think interested people would also read the mag, see some of the greater potential of the sport, and be more fired up to sail. Regardless, extra copies of the Beginner's Guide pamphlet are printed up and sent to shops, schools, clubs, and pretty much anyone who e-mails me asking for one, a dozen, or two dozen. (That's a hint, folks.) I don't have boxes of them yet, but will soon.

Gerda,

I didn't see you on the other thread (although I may have missed your reply in the dozens of others) but I am *actively* trying to improve our subscription services - though, I will be honest, WindSurfing is a pretty small mag in a big company with big magazines, so I kinda feel like my current complaints are falling on deaf ears. I'll keep hammering on it as long as I don't feel it's cutting into the time I need to make a good magazine.
