For better or worse, the annual Yakama Nation Pow Wow is under way.
Last year the Corps ordered all windsurfers to leave the parking lot despite the fact that the Indians parked all over the lawn and left the parking lot virtually empty. I don't know how either issue will be handled this year, thus can't guess how much impact the Pow Wow will have on the lawn or on parking spaces.

Were you ordered out of the upper parking lot also? Maybe Dan the new host will get involved. It was sure nice this year to not have the dogs running loose.

Dan has no say in Indian matters. They are (mis)handled at the federal level, which allows the Indians to violate federal law during the PowWow. When a local federal employee (and windsurfer) whose career was treaties tried to enforce treaty law, he was threatened with arrest. All we can do is stand back and let the local Corps of Engineers personnel, hamstrung by federal policy, do their best to run the show. (My letter to Senator Murray about these and much more egregious problems was dismissed with "Native American affairs are a local, not federal, issue.")

Are you kidding (about the dogs)? They're all over the place, all the time, unleashed, crapping everywhere and pissing on everything at will, until and unless a) Dan can persuade some owners to obey the law (for which he is ostracized by people who don't believe in rules) and/or b) a ranger who takes his job seriously writes some tickets. One dog owner got ticketed for using a leash > 6 feet long.

Yes, and we could not park along the road as many people now do when necessary. The Indians wanted sailors out of there, and the Corps complied. We were instructed to park on the asphalt at the boat launch 200 yards west, or, preferably, to just let the Indians do their thing that weekend. After all, the rangers said repeatedly, "Surely you guys can just do something else this one weekend" ... as though WSing wasn't the most important thing in our lives. Even windsurfers with tickets to the PowWow activities/raffle were ordered to leave, leaving some long faces on their kids. One sailor refused to leave, citing discrimination (anyone but windsurfers and kiters were free to stay), until warned that would cost him a federal citation.

I think Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull told Custer and his guys the same thing when they showed up at the Little Bighorn in 1876.

So you'd enjoy being told to leave on a windy day, walking and rigging in warm dog squeeze, and having your kids disappointed over not being allowed to watch Indian dancing because their parents windsurf? Sorry, I don't buy it, and you haven't heard 10% of the degree or amount of problems we face out there. Be glad some of us are working hard to reduce them.

This sounds like it’s going to end up with more laws, restrictions, and exclusions. Great; just what we need….more fighting. Personally, I think the Indians should be left alone in peace for the one weekend, even a whole week if necessary. Don’t they deserve that? As far as the dog’s go….Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa bunch of f*ck!ng babies. It’s dog poo, not nuclear waste. Growing up and playing football in the field, I learned to enjoy rolling in the poo, at the end of the day I was warm, clean, and snug in bed, happier than a boy in dog poo.

This is why windsurfers embarrass me. Natives ate the dogs. White man whines about them. White man buried all fishing grounds under the very water we sail on. Let them have a day of rememberance! By the way; human beings (kids) are welcome at pow wows. They just don't want to be invaded by pompous windsurfers, thinking what they do is so much more important than anything else in the world.

And dog fights, contagious disease, pets getting killed, children and adults getting bitten, picnic lunches getting gobbled ... and the law in virtually every public park everywhere. Dog owners -- and I are one -- have legal, moral, and social responsibilities.

Besides, nobody wants to interfere with the Pow Wow; many go to watch the ceremonies, eat the food, and look at the incredible native garb. They are welcome at the Pow Wow ... as long as they don't have WS gear or stickers or tan lines.
