you should try second beach or first beach in Newport. It is a very mellow break that is great for beginners. You will feel more comfortable at these spots because they are very safe with side to side on winds. If you are lucky you might run into some better wavesailors there that are more than willing to give you a few pointers.
In terms of your gear, you don't need anything new to get started. Just get out there and start playing in the waves with what you've got. Once you get the bug of riding in the waves you can upgrade to something more wave oriented. |

venturecat, take a look at the video Eddy and I did a while back. It was very onshore wind. Key is to find a wave that breaks down the beach that is long enough to get some turns on them.
Been at some spots in the Gulf of Mexico where the fetch is so short that the waves don't break as a unit for very long. Key there is to drop down one, bottom turn past that and hit the next one outside of it in an extended bottom turn, clew up, perhaps, etc. What would be ideal is a swell coming from the far end of the lake, and a cross offshore wind. Or a prolonged west wind for dayz....

What is said in your video...winds 4-11 mph... seems inconsistent with your reply to Force5 about light wind SUP wave sailing where you said :
"You'll need side off winds of 12 knots or more. Side on, might as well be planing around on a short board, 17 knots or more."
Could anyone clear this up?
Please elaborate.
Thanks,
John |

5.2 sail with a fin back surf board rocker board (the Jungle)vs
the Kona 11'5 and a 7.5 sail. Huge difference in power available esp during onshore conditions. Gotta have the puffs up over 10-11 mph to get even my kit going with the help of the waves' power.
Side off, the wind and wave action create and additive vector similar to the gorge. The Jungle is a great board, compared to others that are even more surf board oriented, but it still has tons of rocker in it. Rocker means slower to plane.
